Marking a significant milestone for Europe’s largest flexible foam manufacturer, Recticel has formally
introduced the Arcadia™ brand of flexible foams made with Cargill’s soy-based BiOH™ polyols.
Unveiled at the Planète Meuble/Furniture Planet show in Paris, the new brand is drawing significant interest from customers looking to lessen the environmental footprint of their furniture and bedding applications. The Arcadia line offers the same level of quality and performance customers have come to expect from Recticel, with the added benefits of the foam’s renewable source.
“At Recticel, we are constantly searching for new products that give our customers, and our company, a technical edge,” said Nick Wallace, Comfort Marketing manager for Recticel. “We chose Cargill’s BiOH polyols for our new Arcadia range to introduce renewable resources in the manufacture of our flexible foams. We found we could use the unique and proprietary soybean oil technology developed by Cargill, to produce high quality foams that our customers expect of us. The implicit reduction in the carbon footprint of the Arcadia foams is already proving to be a popular option.”
Recticel expects to see strong sales of Arcadia across Europe, having initially launched in France. The company is currently marketing new grades of the foam for both seating and mattress applications.
“Recticel is showing tremendous leadership by bringing a new product line to market featuring renewable polyols as a key ingredient,” said Yusuf Wazirzada, business manager of Cargill’s BiOH product line. “Their goals are consistent with ours – to bring high volume, branded and technologically superior flexible foam products to the global market. This is a major milestone in that journey. Our biobased polyols program started as a research project less than four years ago. While we have been selling BiOH polyols to major foam manufacturers in North America for 18 months, now we are selling product in two of the largest markets in the world.”
About the Technology
According to Cargill, BiOH polyols derived from soybean and other natural vegetable oils represent the most significant development the polyurethane industry has seen in decades. The development was recently recognized by the Alliance for the Polyurethanes Industry as its 2006 Technology Innovation Award winner.
BiOH polyols are designed to replace a significant part of petroleum-based polyols as raw materials in flexible foams applications. Foams made with BiOH polyols meet industry standards as compared with conventional petrochemical-based foams.
Preliminary life cycle analysis indicates that the production of BiOH polyols results in a significant reduction in nonrenewable energy demand and a substantial net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to production processes for traditional petrochemical polyols. It is estimated that for every million pounds of petroleum-based polyols replaced with BiOH polyols, nearly 2,200 barrels of crude oil is saved for more critical needs.
Companies interested in exploring the possibilities of biobased urethane polyols should contact Cargill via e-mail at customerservice_polyols@cargill.com.

Las Vegas Market, the fastest growing trade fair in
the world, presented more than 3.5 million square feet of exhibition space at January’s Las Vegas Market with more than 1,500 companies representing all categories of home furnishings, including furniture, decorative accessories, lighting, area rugs, textiles, tabletop, gift and many others.
January’s Market opened with a bang – specifically the grand opening of the $345 million Building B, which featured 300 new showrooms in a stunning 16-story structure. It was also the largest show to date, and significantly exceeded the historic average of 50,000 registrations per market.
“Evidenced by the overwhelming success of the show, World Market Center will be the dominant international Market in the U.S. for buyers and manufacturers,” said Harvey Dondero, chief executive officer of World Market Center. “This was a watershed event and a turning point for the industry. Las Vegas Market clearly represents the future of the home furnishings industry.”
World Market Center officials reported growth not only in the number of registrations and attendees, but also in the ranking and size of buyers, the order writing, and the number of new product introductions.
“The experience of buyers and exhibitors and the high level of energy felt at the market contributed to Las Vegas Market’s overwhelming success,” Dondero added.
January’s record-setting event drew a significant influx of new buyers as well. Market officials report a 60 percent increase in new buyers alone from the last show.
World Market Center worked aggressively to expand participation of international buyers to the January Market which resulted in more than a 50 percent increase in international visitors. Market officials cite a significant increase in buyers from Canada as well as Mexico, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.
Kutub Dungarwalla of Wild Visions Africa, who owns and operates hotels in Kenya, attended Las Vegas Market for the first time stating, “We personally found the Las Vegas Market to be the best show in the furniture industry. We have attended many shows throughout the world and Las Vegas Market and the organizing committee definitely ranks first. It is not a traditional furniture fair that is held in a hall but a pleasant walk around the facilities … and with the approach of what retail should be all about. We were impressed with the quality of the exhibitors and the variety of products from all over. We have already placed orders with five new suppliers.”
Furthermore, the majority of the Top 100 and Top 200 U.S. retailers attended January’s Las Vegas Market. Big and small buyers alike said they were pleased with the quality of the Market and the ease of shopping the complex.
Tim McElwain, Lighting, Clocks & Decorative Accessories buyer for JCPenney Co., Inc. said “The Las Vegas Market has met all of my expectations; and each Market gets better than the one before. The new building and the change to the outside layout is great. The Market is convenient, well laid out and the big players are here. I can’t imagine a better place to have a Market than Vegas. People are extremely friendly and it is easy to get around. Las Vegas Market is so much easier to attend and they make you feel welcome.”
Showroom tenants and temporary exhibitors introduce new product to record-breaking traffic and order-writing; Rave reviews confirm significant influx of high quality, major buyers
January’s Las Vegas Market proved strong for every category with exhibitors and trade media giving rave reviews. Beyond furniture, World Market Center has exploded in other segments of home furnishings, becoming the new hub for accessories, lighting, and in a very big way – bedding and mattress suppliers. Las Vegas has also evolved into a major flooring venue with more than 30 permanent tenants, doubling its rug showrooms from six months ago.
Dominating the line-up of exhibiting companies at Las Vegas Market were furniture suppliers, ranging from the top U.S. manufacturers and up and coming designers to some leading companies overseas.
Ron Wanek, Chairman of Ashley Furniture Industries, the largest tenant at World Market Center who opened a stunning new showroom on the entire 15th floor of Building B, said he saw three times the number of dealers here than he sees at his other markets. These included some new accounts, but also many dealers who had not been to market in years but have decided to come back to Las Vegas due to the excitement of the Market.
Also new to Building B, Dave Heard, executive vice president of sales for aspenhome, said: “It’s been a phenomenal market. Our new showroom has allowed us to really define and show who we are as a company today. It was our strongest market ever in terms of attendance and order writing.” Heard added, “The more manufacturers that are a part of World Market Center, the easier it will be on the retailer. Manufacturers need to show where the buyers want to be, and it seems as though they really like Las Vegas. This has been a very exciting event for the furniture industry and we feel the success of the January show cemented Las Vegas’ future.”
Andrew Cohen, president of Human Touch/Interactive Health, said, “We saw more qualified attendees and Top 100’s at this show. From Florida to New York, East Coast retailers are making an investment into this market and finding new vendors and resources. We are seeing very qualified dealers in Las Vegas.”
New exhibitors were equally enthusiastic.
Marty Olsen, president of the Wilsonville, Oregon-based MasterCraft Furniture, an exhibitor at Cashman Center, said, “We realized this was where we needed to be. We have had a phenomenal Market and we’ve seen people and sold to people from all over the country and also outside of the continental United States, writing good orders with all of them. We have also partnered with some major national accounts that might not have learned about our company if we had not been here in Las Vegas.”
Momentum continues with successful leasing underway for Building C and construction to begin on fourth building; 12 million square feet to be completed by 2013 or sooner
Attendees of January’s Market witnessed another milestone on the horizon: Vertical construction was booming on Building C, a 2.1 million square foot, $540 million structure that will be complete in July 2008. The 16-story structure is already more than one-third leased to top manufacturers in all sectors of the home furnishings industry. Construction is also underway on the new parking garage, just north of the permanent showroom buildings. Officials announced that construction of the fourth building it set to begin by the end of the year, making World Market Center nearly 7 million square feet in the next three years.
“Accelerating the development of the project allows World Market Center to achieve critical mass in a few short years,” said Ron Wackrow, Vice President of The Related Companies, a partner in World Market Center. “Planning building four, before the second building has even opened and as building three is coming out of the ground, is a testament to the resources and momentum behind World Market Center. Our plan is to execute continuous and overlapped construction of all remaining phases of development.”
Wackrow said the completion of all 8 buildings will happen by 2013 “or sooner.”
The Summer Las Vegas Market will take place July 30 – August 3, 2007 at World Market Center’s Buildings A and B, the Pavilions; the temporaries will be featured at Sands Expo & Convention Center opening on Tuesday, July 31. The next Market will be the largest show yet, featuring more than four million square feet of permanent and temporary exhibits. Attendees can start booking discounted Las Vegas hotel rooms now at www.LasVegasMarket.com.

casegoods and leather furniture collections at the Spring Furniture Market in High Point, NC. Kinwai, one of the largest contemporary furniture manufacturers in the world, will introduce new styles of leather sofas, loveseats, sectionals, chairs, and chaises, March 26 - April 1, in its High Point Showroom, IHFC G577/D502. Kinwai will also introduce contemporary casegoods collections, including home theater furniture, tables, dining room, and bedroom furniture at the Market.
Said Zhao, “Contemporary furniture is one of the fastest growing segments in home furnishings. Even in this under-performing market, our company has experienced significant growth because retailers understand our unique pricing and service advantages - that we are one of the few companies that actually manufactures its furniture. Kinwai sells direct to retailers, with no importer or middleman. We have a lot more control over the entire process.”
Some of the featured introductions include:

- Distinctive leather chaises.
- An expanded coffee and side table collection.
- Dining room collections featuring leather upholstered chairs.
- Contemporary bedroom collections featuring Kinwai’s signature platform bed.

To accommodate the demand, especially for its growing contemporary leather division, plans are in the works to double the size of the Kinwai factory in Guangdong. The newly expanded plant is scheduled to open in 2008.
During Market, Kinwai will offer a number of sofa/loveseat and sofa/loveseat/chair combinations at special package pricing for retailers who sell furniture by the room.
For the small to medium-sized retailers, Kinwai offers single SKU and mixed containers at the same low price. Retailers can also place individual piece orders, available from its U.S. distribution centers in San Francisco, CA and in High Point, NC.
KINWAI USA AWARDED ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY CERTIFICATION

These certifications are awarded to leading companies who have implemented dedicated environmental programs as part of their manufacturing operations and also have achieved specified goals outlined in their environmental strategic plan.

Furniture Today,
ST. LOUIS — Furniture Brands International has acquired 11 dedicated Broyhill, Lane and
Thomasville stores from dealer Steve Kloss, the third known take-back of key dealer stores in recent months.
Furniture Brands spokesman Marty Richmond confirmed that the company acquired four Broyhill, four Lane Home Furnishings and three Thomasville Home Furnishings stores, all in greater St. Louis.
He said FBI will continue operating the stores. He would not disclose the purchase price or what led the company to take back the stores.
Earlier this month, Thomasville Stores of New Jersey and Virginia said it sold its four northern Virginia stores to Furniture Brands’ Thomasville Furniture Inds. division and will focus on growth in New Jersey. The retailer, led by President and CEO Michael Massood, has five Thomasville stores in New Jersey and plans to add five more over the next three to five years.
Late last year, Hendricks Furniture Group sold three Drexel Heritage stores in North Carolina to Furniture Brands and converted its two remaining Drexel stores in Raleigh, N.C. and Greenville, S.C., to its full-line Boyles Distinctive Furniture format.
“We have acquired stores over time,” Richmond said. “I think that’s the natural evolution of the stores program. I think it happens to be coincidence that there happens to be a bunch of them right at this moment, and I would not expect to see this pace continue.”
Asked if the tough business climate in the industry was a factor, Richmond said he doesn’t know, but that circumstances varied.
“Kloss had options,” he said. “Massood wants to focus on New Jersey. Hendricks wants to focus on Boyles. Different transactions had different reasons. …”
At the end of last year, Furniture Brands said it had 21 company-owned stores, up from 14 a year earlier. The Kloss and Massood deals would push the count to 36 stores.
Richmond said Furniture Brands’ plan to use dedicated stores as a main form of distribution for Thomasville and Drexel Heritage haven’t changed. But the manufacturer and importer has tempered its once-aggressive plans for Broyhill and Lane stores.
Broyhill isn’t opening new stores, putting its focus on in-store gallery dealers. Lane will open a few stores this year, he said.

Known for their signature designs for top houses including Judith Leiber, Calvin Klein and Nanette Lepore, as well as
their own couture shoe line; Silvano Banfi and Frank Zambrelli have taken their shared vision into a new realm of fashion design - furniture. Robin Bruce has enlisted the highly sought after team to design their new Fall 2007 collection of upholstery furniture.
The Banfi Zambrelli for Robin Bruce collection will debut at the High Point International Home Furnishings Market in March 2007 and will be available in select stores in May 2007. The line of custom designed sofas, chairs and ottomans brings to life Banfi and Zambrelli’s vision of “pure” and “sinful,” with clean-line styles and textiles ranging from shimmering textures to rich brocades. “We approached furniture design the way we do all forms of fashion, we envision a certain type of woman and bring to life an aesthetic that would please her,” said Banfi.
“Every woman has a good girl and a bad girl inside; our furniture designs and fabrics represent the alter egos of the same person. One day she wants to wear striking jewel tones and the next white linen. This same woman would also want to express both her pure and sinful sides in her home décor – she was our inspiration,” said Zambrelli.
“Robin Bruce is a creative line of furniture and we thought the best way to show its versatility was to invite guest designers Frank Zambrelli and Silvano Banfi to put their mark on it. It gives a unique and sophisticated perspective to Robin Bruce,” said Stefanie Lucas, Senior Vice President of Robin Bruce and Rowe Furniture, LLC.
The design team looked to luxury forms of transportation as inspiration for the aero-dynamic lines of their modernized chairs, sofas and ottomans, reinterpreting classics such as 1930’s club furniture, and the streamlined aesthetic of seating found inside a Gulf Stream 5 or a yacht. “We are known for designing pieces on the classic side of the very modern. Our Banfi Zambrelli for Robin Bruce pieces are no different; they are not contemporary just for the sake of modernity, but are pieces that will be striking in the home for years and years to come,” said Zambrelli.
As always with Robin Bruce, customers can choose to customize the pieces with a myriad of fabrics and colors. Pure and sinful looks can be mixed for an eclectic look, or matched for a tonal look. Banfi Zambrelli for Robin Bruce, like all Robin Bruce designs, will be delivered in about 30 days of purchase, unlike most customizable furniture brands that can take months to be delivered to the customer.
Silvano Banifi and Frank Zambrelli will be in the Robin Bruce showroom Monday through Wednesday, March 26th – 28th. There will be a cocktail reception to meet the designers Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 5:30 PM. For more information email shawh@hisaokapr.com.
Robin Bruce offers a distinctive, decorator’s approach to custom upholstered furniture offering a selection of 225 fabrics. Robin Bruce debuted in April 1998 at the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, North Carolina. Robin Bruce (www.robinbruce.com) is manufactured by Rowe Furniture, Inc. Rowe is a leading manufacturer of custom upholstered furniture in the United States. Robin Bruce is available at major home furnishings retailers and better independent home furnishings retailers across the United States and around the world.
