Las Vegas Market officials announced the opening of the Living Green Pavilion, which will make its debut at the Summer Market, July 30 – August 3, 2007.
The inaugural Living Green Pavilion will highlight the growing style and substance of eco-friendly home furnishings and will be located at Sands Expo temporary show, opening on Tuesday July 31.
This featured Pavilion is in addition to the many other environmentally-conscious manufacturers with permanent showrooms in World Market Center’s Buildings A and B who are also showing new products and evolving their sustainable product lines and practices.
“One of the most important issues in the world today is protecting the environment, and so it’s no surprise that the home furnishings industry is becoming more in tune with consumer demand and the usage of sustainable resources in their products,” said Tim Branscome, World Market Center’s Director of International Business Development. “World Market Center is pleased to launch Living Green, which creates a platform for these cutting-edge companies and products, while also informing and educating the entire furniture industry on the latest trends and developments in the sustainable furnishings marketplace.”
World Market Center has teamed up with the Sustainable Furniture Council (SFC) to organize the pavilion due to the organization’s commitment and realistic views on attaining sustainability. Branscome said it is important to raise the profile of companies who are leading the movement in sustainability, and SFC has established meaningful criteria in terms of identifying suppliers as truly sustainable.
“We are happy that World Market Center has asked us to be part of this market that is becoming increasingly important,” said Gerry Cooklin, president of the Sustainable Furniture Council. “Our member companies will have a fairly large showing area, which will allow us to reinforce our message. Sustainability is a topic of fast growing concern, and even though our industry has been lagging other industries in this awareness, it’s never too late to catch up. We look forward to meeting many more new companies that will be ready to join us.”
From a retail and consumer point of view, buyers are clamoring for ideas, information and products that help them incorporate sustainable furniture, on-trend designs and leading edge styles, said Branscome. Las Vegas Market officials believe they are in a unique position to help guide this industry initiative.
To that end, a particularly exciting special feature of the Living Green exhibit will be the exclusive “greenhouse gallery” – an incubator platform showcasing new design directions within the sustainable home furnishings category.
“We have discovered that the producers of furniture using sustainable materials are not only pioneers, but also design innovators. The introduction and availability of various new sustainable materials appears to have stimulated a whole new community of designers who are now finding their way into the market,” Branscome added. “This July is a starting point for introducing this segment at Las Vegas Market. Naturally, we want to see sustainable content grow, and we intend to continue to bring new suppliers, new products and new eco-friendly developments to the marketplace.”
Also slated for July is a panel discussion, “Retail Sustainability,” presented by Home Furnishings Business. The dynamic discussion will explore how key retailers have incorporated sustainable practices into their business plans for the future. Members of the Sustainable Furniture Council, the designated beneficiary for this event, will be present and answer questions and support retailers in their outreach efforts.
The Living Green Pavilion is a collaborative effort between World Market Center, Sustainable Furniture Council (SFC), and Channel Logic, Inc. — a leading sustainable products representation firm World Market Center is aggressively marketing and promoting these initiatives, investing in a significant public relations and advertising campaign to ensure maximum exposure for the program and participating exhibitors. The Living Green Pavilion and its panel discussion will be featured in pre-show direct mail, advertising campaigns and at the Market, as well as editorials in various magazines and directories.

Members of North Jersey’s Ramapough Indians are objecting to Martha Stewart’s effort to market a new furniture line under the brand name “Katonah” because the name belongs to a 17th-century tribal chief.
Stewart already was in a trademark dispute with a community group in the hamlet of Katonah, in Westchester County, N.Y., where she owns a 153-acre estate.
Now the Katonah Village Improvement Society has enlisted support from leaders of the Ramapough Indians, who say Stewart’s bid to trademark the name “Katonah” exploits the memory of a revered ancestor.
According to legend, Chief Katonah led the Ramapough Indians in North Jersey until the late 1600s, when the Dutch chased them into what is now New York State, said Steven Burton, a member of the Deer Clan of the Ramapough Lenape Nation.
Chief Katonah eventually sold the area near present-day Katonah, N.Y., to white settlers, Burton said.
“We’re concerned that she’s trying to trademark the Katonah name, as anybody would,” Burton said. “It’s our ancestor whose name she’s using to exploit for money.”
A spokeswoman for Stewart’s company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, said the homemaking advocate and television personality wants to use the “Katonah” name to sell home furnishings, paints and other products.
The spokeswoman, Diana Pearson, has said Stewart “seeks to honor the town and the hamlet by using the word ‘Katonah.’ ”
Pearson declined to comment Tuesday when asked about the Ramapoughs’ objections.
Autumn Scott, who represents the Ramapough Indians on the New Jersey Department of State Commission on American Indian Affairs, said she didn’t believe that Stewart had set out to hurt feelings by appropriating the name.
“I think that she is doing what she does best, and that is market and make money,” Scott said. “The thing that really disturbs me and a number of people in our community is the fact that she’s doing it for profit, and that she, I’m sure, is totally uninformed and uneducated as to anything dealing with the Native American community.”
Scott said the Ramapoughs had enlisted support from the Powatan-Renape and Nanticoke Leni-Lenape tribes, both of which have strong representation in New Jersey.
“I don’t think [Stewart] is even aware of how many hundreds of thousands of native people are offended by this, and how many thousands live within her immediate area that are watching this and are very concerned,” Scott said. “That’s why it’s important for us to stand up and give voice to our community.”

Premier Furniture evened its season record to 1-1 in 12-and-under softball last night at Rolling Hills Park by beating QuinlanAgency.com by a score of 18-7.
Premier Furniture never trailed in the game against QuinlanAgency.com and plated six runs in the top-half of the first on five walks and two hit batters.
However, in the bottom-half of the first, QA.com rallied back with two runs on two walks to make it 6-2.
Meanwhile, in the second inning, Premier Furniture came back and exploded for six runs on five walks and a single by Haley Hilden only to have QuinlanAgency.com send four runs across in the bottom-half of the inning on three walks and a two-RBI single by Katie Wood to cut the lead to six at 12-6.
Unfortunately for QuinlanAgency.com, they never got any closer in the ballgame as Premier Furniture added six more runs in the third on five walks and a single by Daisey Scott to push the lead to 18-6. Then, in the bottom-half of the third, QA.com sent another run acrosson three walks to end the scoring.
Clint Poulsen, Babe Ruth softball president, said this game had a lot of walks because of the conditions. “Luckily, we got the game in,” Poulsen said.
Marie Gentry picked up the win on the mound for Premier Furniture while Katie Wood took the loss for QuinlanAgency.com.
In three innings pitched, Gentry struck out eight batters and gave up seven runs on one hit and eight walks. Wood, meanwhile, pitched part of the first and surrendered six runs on five walks. Hannah Verslues then came in and pitched 1/3 inning and allowed six runs on one hit and five walks. Then, to finish the game, Abby Humfeld pitched part of the third and yielded five runs on one hit and four walks.

New Franklin Impact 12
P&C Trucking 11
New Franklin Impact held off a rally by P&C Trucking in the final-two innings for a 12-11 victory last night in Babe Ruth 12-and-under softball at Rolling Hills Park.
New Franklin Impact, 2-0 on the season, actually trailed briefly in the ballgame after giving up one run in the top-half of the first on two walks and a single by Courtney Lampson.
Unfortunately for P&C Trucking, they never led again in the ballgame as New Franklin Impact rallied back with six runs in the bottom-half of the first on 10 walks to make it 6-1.
Then, in the second inning, P&C Trucking plated another run on one walk only to have New Franklin Impact explode for six more runs in the bottom-half of the inning on seven walks to push the lead to 12-2.
Needless to say, the game was far from being over as P&C Trucking rallied back with six runs in the top-half of the third on five walks and three more in the fourth on five walks to cut the lead to one.
Poulsen said the New Franklin Impact got out to a large lead, but P&C Trucking made a large comeback just to fall short at the time limit.
Emily Hendrix picked up the win on the mound for New Franklin Impact while Kassie Hester took the loss for P&C Trucking.
Hendrix started the game and pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on one hit and seven walks while striking out three. Aly Hundley then came in and pitched 1/3 inning in relief and allowed three runs on four walks while striking out three batters. Then, to finish the game, Kalani Pihana pitched 2/3 inning and surrendered one run on two walks while striking out one.
For P&C Trucking, Kassie Hester pitched 1 1/3 innings and issued 10 runs on 12 walks. Morgan Woods then came in and pitched 1 1/3 innings and yielded two runs on one hit and four walks while striking out three batters.
Cassie Snider had the only hit in the game for New Franklin Impact, being a single, while Courtney Lampson finished the game with a single and one RBI for P&C Trucking.
Emily Hendrix and Aly Hundley also drove in two runs each for New Franklin Impact while Kallie Monteer, Abagail Prewitt, Kalani Pihana and Faith Griffin had one RBI each.
