The Canadian Home Furnishings Market
The Canadian Home Furnishings Market, the highly anticipated annual get-together for industry professionals, is all set for January 12 to 15, 2008, at the International Centre in Mississauga, near Toronto. Some 400 Canadian and international manufacturers, distributors and exhibitors featured in more than 70 permanent and outside showrooms, will launch their new products for 2008.
As a show that’s all about new and exclusive furniture, The Canadian Home Furnishings Market represents the most complete residential furniture offering in Canada, covering all product categories. It’s also the only furniture exhibit in Canada that brings together the highest concentration of local and international exhibitors under one roof. The thousands of retailers who attend the show each year understand the importance of attending in order to track down exclusive high-quality collections from Canadian manufacturers that make all the difference to their customers, while discovering a wide range of products from further-flung horizons. Retailers who buy from Canadian manufacturers not only have access to quality and exclusivity, but also to environmentally friendly products. Furthermore, Canadian furniture is manufactured in accordance with the organization and management methods of “Just in Time”, and can be delivered very quickly in small quantities to avoid cumbersome inventory. Finally, by choosing Canadian manufacturers, retailers enjoy fast and flexible after sales service.
Friendly and professional: Each year, the Canadian Home Furnishings Market takes place in a friendly and professional ambience. The show features furniture collections for every room of the house, furniture and accessories for the juvenile market, bedding, lighting, and decorative accessories—all of which are on display throughout 700,000 square feet of exhibition space. To facilitate travel for attendees, a free shuttle service between the International Centre and nearby hotels is provided. And to set just the right mood for meetings and discussions, the show organizes two very popular cocktail parties that are a hit, year after year.
As such, exhibitors and retailers are hereby invited to a “5-to-7 happy hour” in the main entrance of Hall 1 on Friday, January 11, to kick-off the show’s opening. On the program: music, drinks and appetizers. The Kick-off Cocktail Party is sponsored by Furniture/Today, the industry’s weekly magazine.
The 2008 Tends Display Launch Party, sponsored by Furniure Style magazine, will take place on Saturday, January 12, at 6 p.m. in Hall 5. Created by the show’s highly coveted presentation design specialists, André Caron and Pierre D’Anjou, fourteen new displays will feature unique design concepts that shine the spotlight on products from many of our Canadian exhibitors. Seward furniture maker Lael Ki Gordon has been named among 13 recipients of a 2007 Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Project Awards.
Gordon has won $3,440, which he will use to buy equipment.
“You have to be specific about what you’re going to spend the money on since it’s a project award,” Gordon said.
While attending the Inside Passage School of Fine Woodworking in Robert’s Creek, B.C., he created a cabinet using a veneering technique called prismatic parquet.
The technique is a combination of what he’d learned with something he invented.
He wanted to continue exploring the process, but after finishing school he did not have access to the necessary tools and equipment anymore.
Gordon applied for the grant in August but put it out of his mind knowing that the Rasmuson awards are competitive. It was the third time he had applied. The first time he applied to help fund his schooling, but he didn’t get it.
Gordon almost didn’t apply for the grant this time.
“It is a pretty big process. You submit a resume, portfolio and a project description, a budget, and artist statement. It takes some time but at the same time I’m very aware it’s a long shot.
“I certainly didn’t expect to win. It’s a good feeling though.” Gordon said.
The 30-year-old furniture maker said he enjoys playing with the way light refracts off the surface of the wood.
“It’s not something you see a lot of anymore.”
Once he gets his equipment and workshop set up, he plans to construction several large-scale prismatic parquetry cabinets.
Gordon was featured in the November-December issue of “Fine Woodworking” magazine, a national publication (”Skilled artisan appears in ‘Fine Woodworking,’” The Seward Phoenix Log, Nov. 1).
The list of Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Project Award winners is online at > http://www.rasmuson.org/ .

PROFITsystems, Inc. announced the introduction of remote hosting to its services for furniture and home goods retailers. The company has designed and engineered a sophisticated remote hosting network for it clients, according to Jeff Niskern, president. PROFITon-demand began rolling out to clients nationwide last month.
As a remote hosting tool, the company says, PROFITon-demand is unmatched in reliability, which includes 24-hour monitoring and maintenance by IT specialists and network engineers. The new service boasts a state-of-the-art data center for high-speed data transfer and consistency, and managed firewall hardware for rock-solid, vaulted data security.
PROFITsystems developed its hosting environment to be more affordable and hassle-free, compared with traditional methods – most providers install their software products directly on clients’ internal computers and networks. “PROFITon-demand is an easier way to implement and to update the software that our clients use to run their businesses profitably,” says Niskern. “If you are a furniture retailer, you want to focus on your furniture business. You don’t want to be an IT expert, too.”
A monthly subscription fee is the only requirement for access and covers all upgrades. “It’s hard to keep up with all the tech stuff, especially in a tight economy” said W. Clyede Mynatt, president, The House Store, Atlanta, Georgia. “Who wants to invest in computer equipment or software that is going to be obsolete in no time,” added Mynatt, who is an early adopter of the new program. “Plus, I don’t want to worry that something went wrong with a nightly back up. My entire staff can access information from anywhere, so that’s another advantage. This is the way of the future, except that PROFITon-demand is available now.”
PROFITon-demand is the first fully comprehensive hosting tool available to the furniture trade, providing shared documents tools, which includes ubiquitous applications like Microsoft Office. “PROFITon-demand fits the scale of our operation perfectly,” said Ken Sisson, owner, Domaine Fine Furnishings and Design, Calgary, AB, Canada. “It’s straightforward and you get everything you need versus having to establish a separate budget for software.”
PROFITsystems, Inc. is a leading provider of home goods management software, consulting and retail business solutions. Software features include fully integrated inventory management and accounting systems. PROFITon-demand allows clients to implement PROFITprofessional, the company’s signature software program, with limited start-up and lower maintenance costs.

Furniture and accessories manufacturers from Cebu are optimistic of penetrating the Russian market.
A 10-member delegation from Cebu went to Moscow recently on a study mission to penetrate the Russian market through the biggest furniture exhibition in Russia and Eastern Europe.
Eric Vincent Casas, president of the Cebu Furniture Industries Association Inc., said their visit, which was joined by six-member companies, was aimed at helping hone a specific strategy that would expand sales of Philippine furniture in the multimillion dollar Russian market through the Mebel Furniture 2007 furniture exhibition.
During the said trip, Arthur Akopyan, an associate of the Moscow branch of Expormim, a Spanish furniture firm that also sells pieces to China, Vietnam and Malaysia, said Russia’s hosting of the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 will fuel a large expansion in furniture sales, a boom that the Philippines can definitely exploit.
“Filipino furniture is of the same quality if not better than Italian furniture,” Akopyan said during a meeting with Casas’ group.
Akopyan said that with the current construction boom, more Russians are acquiring “kottezhi” or full-fledged second homes that put the traditional Soviet-style dachas or country houses in suburban areas.
Akopyan said the need to decorate all the new space is expected to spur demand.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippine furniture is known in Russia and has been repeatedly featured in trade and industry magazines in Russia such as Tabouret, Mebel Tseny, Elle Decor and Salon.
But at the moment, only two companies are importing Philippine furniture. The top supplier of Philippine-made ethnic furniture in Russia, the British-owned firm Dreamlake, founded by Michael Robsky, sells Kenneth Cobonpue and Antonio Layug designs exclusively to wealthy oligarchs.
