When brothers Harold and Richard Tubman decided to open a new Circle Furniture store in Pembroke, times were certainly different.“The future was a lot rosier then than it is now,†said Richard’s wife Peggy Burns, who co-owns the family business. “We’re still excited, but it’s a different climate right now.â€
Despite economic uncertainty, the Tubmans went forward with plans for the new shop, renovating the building at the corner of routes 53 and 139 and opening their doors to customers in January.
“We felt a need in the South Shore. A lot of people wanted us to have a bigger store … and we were waiting for the right space,†Burns said. The company is closing its smaller Hanover store.
“We believe in Circle Furniture, we believe in our product, and we have to have some faith that our customers will continue to find us,†Harold Tubman said.
Circle Furniture was started in the 1950s by the brothers’ grandfather, Issadore Tubman, and was run for a long time by their father, Robert Tubman. The Pembroke store is the company’s fifth; they also have locations in Acton, Cambridge, Danvers and Framingham.
