Bed Platform Type

It is unclear how the bedroom platform was made. Additionally, sometimes there are no clear instructions about the types of bed platforms and the qualities of each type of platform. Let’s explain what the main types of platforms are and what their differences.

Slat Platform
Wooden planks of equal width and length that run between 2-bed rails are usually called ‘slats’. It is attached to an additional inner rail that are also attached to the outer rail. Slat platform systems are the most basic because they usually only contain 3-6 slats. In fact, this number of slats is usually not enough to support the mattress itself, and a box spring or Bunkie board is required. Box springs are usually solid, so when placed on top of the slats, the weight of the mattress will be evenly distributed.

Slat systems are usually the least stable, but don’t hesitate to buy this bed as long as with the box spring, the bed remains very stable. This bed is designed with even distribution of weight/box/mattress consideration. Alternatively, you can purchase or make extra slats that can be attached to the bedside, so that the mattress can be used without a box. Slat systems are usually the most affordable systems, but in general it is meant for people who prefer a higher bed.

Modern Platforms
This type of bedroom platform is called a full platform or simply ‘platform’ and is used in most fine modern beds. This is a sturdy Scandinavian-type platform. This type of platform typically uses a metal frame that splits down the middle along the length of the bed and has a series of short wooden slats pre-installed. Additionally, the frame is usually connected to the outer frame of the bed with 4-12 bolts. These platforms also have support legs attached to the center of the frame, this way the load is not only distributed to the bed frame, but directly to the center of the floor. It is clear that this type of platform is very strong and almost unmovable.

Modern platform is very commonly used today. It does not require a box spring, and beds with this type of platform are usually lower than slat beds.

Solid Platform
Sometimes, modern-style platform beds use a solid platform instead of any slats. This type of platform is also very sturdy and does not require additional support for the mattress. However, this type of platform provides additional restraints on the mattress, and in some cases, the mattress can easily move or slide on this platform. Most people prefer their mattresses to be immovable. That of course depends on the mattress and the edge of the bed. Even though in general this type of platform may be ‘the strongest’, this is not always the case, as it may lack the versatile flexibility and movement-suppressing capabilities that a typical metal/board platform has.
