Sideboards remain a very popular piece of furniture. Although traditionally the sideboard was intended to used formally, the dining room divider, which of course is no longer the case, as it is now often placed in kitchens and living rooms, and sometimes even in bedrooms or hallways. The sideboards are usually relatively large so it is worth considering how big the room is and whether you can fit it into the room.
Sideboards of course come in all shapes and sizes today, from short to long and deep to narrow, and often you’ll be able to find something that’s just right for the dimensions of your space. However, if you can’t find sideboards in the right size, it might also be worth considering something like a console table, which will be smaller and slimmer, while still offering some storage capacity.
The main benefit of a sideboard can bring to your home is to provide plenty of storage. Obviously you want your new sideboard to look good, but because of its relatively large size, it shouldn’t be considered decorative furniture unless you have a very large room. Before you buy, evaluate how much you will need storage cabinets in the room and what will be stored in them. This will not only help you make sure you need a sideboard, it will also help guide you about its size.
Try to calculate the approximate volume of storage you will need and then choose a unit that provides a little more than this. The main thing to avoid is to choose a unit that has more storage capacity than you really need, especially if space is expensive.
The key is to make sure that the sideboards will not overcrowd the room. A good and practical way to test is placed or stack a number of boxes together that equivalent to the dimensions of the sideboard you are interested in. Leave it there for a week or so and then evaluate if the room feels cramped.
One additional aspect to consider is the practicality of getting it in to your home. It is highly recommended to check the size of any wardrobe you are interested in very carefully and to make sure that the unit will fit through the door inside your house or flat.
