The presence of windows for a house, not only functions as air and light ventilation, but also has aesthetic value. Giving “clothes” is one way of dressing up the window so that it can be more optimal in carrying out its role. The presence of “clothes” for windows can also cover deficiencies in windows or spaces, such as slanted and imprecise sills, improper window sizes, or defective walls around windows, or unbalanced spatial composition.
Just like the function of clothes in humans, the choice of clothes for windows also varies. Curtains and blinds are 2 types of clothes on the windows, each of which has a large variety of materials and styles.
Opened to the Side
Curtains are generally made of cloth, and opened and closed to the side. All types of fabrics can be used as material for a curtain. However, there are special requirements if you want the curtains to function optimally. One of them is the material can cover the view well (not transparent) and when installed, it looks good. Heavy fabrics (velvet, chenile, and other synthetic materials), usually meet this requirement. Besides its heavy, this material also has dense fibers so that it can provide privacy for you in the room. Its appearance can also change the impression of a room to be more luxurious. Meanwhile, lighter materials (cotton, linen, satin, and silk) are more suitable to give softer space impression. Functionally, thin (light) materials can reduce heat. While the thick (heavy) material guarantees privacy, blocks views and heat. In addition to the type of material, the choice of color, pattern and texture also determines the success of creating your wanted impression of space, and the ability of the curtains to reflect light.
There are also types of window coverings made from materials other than fabric, such as aluminum, PVC, bamboo, solid wood, fiber, or a mixture of these materials. The first type, vertical blind, the pieces of material are placed vertically. On the market, we find several sizes: 90 mm, 127 mm and 100 mm. The materials used are the mix of fabric and plastic, mixture of fiber and PVC, mixture of PVC and polyester and vinyl. Second, the horizontal blind is a window cover that consisting of rectangular pieces of material placed horizontally in a row. Apart from wood, materials that are also often used are plastic or aluminum. The size of the material chips varies, from 15 mm, 16 mm, 25 mm, to 50 mm.
Fold or Roll
We also know what is called the roman blind and the roller blind. Called sa roman blind is because when opened, this cover will form overlapping folds. This model of window covering uses a fabric that has folded shape. Even when it is raised and lowered, this cover remains perfectly folded. Roman blinds require special rails as a place to hang which also functions to regulate (brake) the control rope. This type can be used for all types of windows in the house. Materials used for this kind of blind are light ones such as cotton, linen, satin, silk (layered). Because the material is light, roman blinds are suitable for soft and modern style spaces.
Roller blinds are similar in shape to roman blinds, only when open, the shutters will be rolled upwards instead of folded. You can do this with a spring or a chain to raise and lower the fabric. For the spring system, it is enough to pull the fabric part downwards, while for the chain system it is done by pulling the chain that placed on the right or left side of the roller blind. Roller blind materials include fabric (polyester), fiber and PVC. Each material has variations texture, color, design, and decoration. The spring system is more expensive than the chain system. This type of blind, which is commonly applied in offices, hotels and apartments, is also suitable for use in kitchens and work spaces.
