Earthquakes can occur along with volcanic eruptions. One small part of the precautionary effort is securing household furniture from earthquakes. Even though it looks trivial, household furniture can injure people at home when an earthquake occurs.
Geotechnologists suggest that it is necessary to attach furniture to the walls of the house. Its function is so that the furniture does not collapse. We also need to instill this in ourselves and society so that we are safe from earthquakes and not only buildings that have to be strong but also the furniture in the house.
In addition to securing household furniture by attaching it to the wall with a rope, every home should also have a safe room. The safe room is one of rooms in the house that specially prepared as a shelter during an earthquake. An example of setting up a safe room is a bedroom equipped with a strong cot as a shelter for all the people in the house. Or, this space can created by placing other strong furniture for shelter such as teak tables, and so on.
Furniture under the stairs can also used as a safe space. The safe room at least helps prevent casualties. The safe space can protect the body from being crushed by collapsed objects, including houses that can no longer withstand earthquake shocks.
When an earthquake occurs, people should not panic. They must understand the anticipation needs. There are several things that everyone can do when an earthquake comes.
- Protect your head with pillow or helmet, or stand under a door.
- Take cover under the table to prevent any falling objects
- If you leave the house, protect your head and go to an open field while avoiding the possibility of being hit by broken glass or the like
- Do not stand near poles, trees, power sources, or buildings
- Use a strong structural part of the building or house for shelter, such as a corner of a building
- Follow the evacuation instructions from the rescuer
- Use the emergency stairs to evacuate out of the building instead of using elevator. If you are stuck in an elevator, try to press all the buttons or calling the building manager.
