Klang Valley Streets :For 5-star furniture

FIVE-STAR luxury at affordable prices, that’s the allure of furniture dealers Kin Peun Trading, at Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur.

Kin Peun means what it says, because the company deals in used furniture from five-star hotels.

One of the country’s largest hotel furniture recyclers, Kin Peun specialises in furnishings from five-star hotels worldwide.

Kin Peun Trading was started 12 years ago by Mok Yok Chang, 55 a real estate businessman. “We started by purchasing furniture from the local hotels such as the Regent Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Hilton Hotel in Petaling Jaya and Hyatt Saujana Hotel,” he said.

Mok says that because nearly all five-star hotels refurnish every three to four years, all the pieces are sometimes in excellent condition.
When Mok first ventured into this industry he started with recycling one hotel a year. Now he travels all over Asia to do business. “At the moment, we are working on a project with Shangri-La Hotel in Hong Kong. And soon we will be working with the Hyatt, Westin, Sheraton and Renaissance in Shanghai,” he said.

Mok Wai Kin, 30, manager of Kin Peun Trading, who runs the daily operations of the store, said that most of his customers are three-star hotel operators, house owners, interior designers and property investors who want to furnish their properties.

“Currently we are getting a lot of diverse customers. This is due to the fact that we now have a bigger turn-over and more merchandise to offer,” he said.

“We are doing a lot more retail now since we own a four-storey shop lot. For the first seven years we didn’t have a showroom and we had to sell all the pieces directly from the hotel,” he said.

“There are now a lot of walk-in customers who frequent the showroom on weekdays and weekends, mainly families and bargain hunters looking to spruce up their home or simply browsing around for some good bargains,” he added.

Wai Kin said the store carries a lot of branded and top quality items.

As all the furniture are used items, they all exhibit signs of some wear and tear, such as nicks and scratches. Kin Peun will pick the best piece for each customer, although if the item is unique, they cannot guarantee that it will be scratch-free. Kin Peun Trading’s current collection of products consists of armoires (large ornate cabinets or wardrobes), beds, side-tables, floor lamps, paintings, lobby chairs, writing tables, coffee tables, phone desk, TV cabinets and other items typical of hotels.

“Over the years we have accumulated a wide range of products. Working with four to five hotels a year gives us the chance to provide a wide variety of merchandise. Now customers can mix and match their products,” said Wai Kin.

All the furniture has been crafted by some of the best designers and manufacturers in world and often features inlaid wood designs, gold ormolu, elegant styling and granite and marble surfaces.

“Basically everything here is cash-and-carry,” he said. Customers must transport all items, although the company will arrange for delivery services by third-party companies.
