Some things should not be stored in Plastic Storage

Plastic storage is often a practical choice for storing various items at home. They’re affordable, lightweight, and available in multiple sizes. But not all things can be stored in plastic containers. This is especially true if the containers are tightly sealed and stored in humid or unstable temperatures. If you don’t store them properly, they could get damaged.

Leather Items
Don’t store leather bags, shoes, or jackets in sealed plastic containers. Leather is a natural material that can change when it gets wet or hot. If moisture gets trapped inside the container, the leather surface can become sticky, cracked, or even moldy. Heat can also damage the natural oils in leather that keep it soft. Instead, store leather items in a place that has a lot of airflow, like a cotton bag or a special fabric box.

Photos and albums to keep your memories in
Storing printed photos in regular plastic containers can damage the quality of the photos. Heat and humidity can cause the ink in the photos to bleed, the colors to fade, or the photos to stick together. This is especially true if the plastic used isn’t acid-free. To keep your photos from getting ruined, use special boxes made to protect them over time.

Important Documents
You should not store documents like diplomas, birth certificates, or other important documents in regular plastic containers. Humidity and heat can speed up the process of paper deterioration. Also, non-acid-free plastic can speed up the deterioration of documents. Choose folders that are acid-free and suitable for storing documents. Use cardboard boxes that are made to last. Store your documents in a cool, dry place.

Electronics
Don’t store old cameras, used cell phones, or data storage devices in tightly sealed plastic containers. When temperatures change, condensation can form inside the container. This can cause corrosion or a short circuit

Seasonal Clothing
People often store clothes that are made for cold weather or that they don’t wear often in plastic containers. But if you leave it in there too long, the moisture can cause mold to grow, especially on fabrics like wool, cashmere, or silk. It’s best to store clothes in a fabric container or a box with good air circulation to keep them dry.

Pet Food
Some pet owners store dry food in plastic containers. While plastic is convenient, some types of plastic can release tiny particles that can contaminate food, especially if the plastic doesn’t meet food safety standards. Plastic can also absorb odors and flavors, which can change the quality of your pet’s food over time. Use metal or food-grade plastic containers designed for storing food to keep it safe for your pet.

Wet or Damp Items
Don’t put towels, swimsuits, or other wet items directly into sealed plastic containers. If moisture is trapped, it can create a humid environment that encourages unpleasant odors and mold growth. Make sure all items are completely dry before storing or using containers with good air circulation.
