Tips for Moving Furniture Without Scratching The Floor

Whether made of hardwood, vinyl, or ceramic, the floors in your home are very susceptible to various kinds of damage, like the movement of furniture. Although pushing furniture is the easiest option for moving it, especially for heavy furniture, it is never advisable to do so. When you move furniture by pushing it, you can not only scratch or damage the floor in your home, but you can also accidentally bang it against walls and doors. For this reason, it is very important to prepare for the right move with appropriate strategies, tools and supplies for moving furniture. Remember, dragging your furniture without protection is a major no when it comes to moving sofas, chairs, tables, dressers and tables.

Ask for Some Help
Moving heavy furniture will never be easy by 1-2 people, unless you plan to move some small parts, such as chairs, plant stands, tables, and so on. It is highly recommended to ask for help. Why? Because lifting and pushing heavy furniture by yourself is not a good idea. Not only can injure your back and shoulders, but you can also damage that beautiful floor. To avoid scratching the floor, enlist the help of a few friends or family members to remove all the heavy furniture. This includes beds, sofas, coffee tables, cupboards, dining tables, large chairs, dressing tables, and so on.

Unloading Furniture
Whatever you do, don’t try to move the furniture as is. Make sure to disassemble everything. Some examples include dismantling your bed frame, headboard and mattress, removing pillows from the sofa, and removing all the drawers in your desk or cupboard. This step doesn’t take long and will really help lighten the load. If a piece of furniture requires legs or parts to be removed, you should make sure to have a toolbox. Once you’ve disassembled the furniture, moving it should be easy.

Get It All Off The Floor
From rugs to baskets and knick-knacks, make sure everything is off the floor before moving furniture. This is important for several reasons, firstly, you can trip over something on the floor when moving heavy furniture. Second, you can’t actually move furniture if you keep bumping into things along the way, and third, you could potentially scratch furniture other than your floor.

Use a blanket, towel or moving cardboard
If you can find blankets, towels, or cardboard, use them while moving furniture, and this is highly recommended. Blankets, towels or cushioned cardboard, can be used to wrap and protect furniture as you push or pull it across the floor.

Buy a furniture slider or glider
Use furniture-specific sliders to move furniture. These sliders (or sometimes called gliders) can be easily found online. Sliders are special pads made of plastic, rubber, or felt that fit under the legs of furniture. Once placed under furniture, you’ll be able to easily slide things across the floor without scratching them. The furniture slider is perfect for sofas, dressers, tables and heavy equipment.

Move your furniture slowly and carefully
Whatever you do, make sure to move your furniture slowly and carefully so as not to damage the floor. Be sure to use proper lifting techniques when moving furniture. This means bending your knees and hips to “squat under the weight, stay close to your body, and straighten your legs to lift.” You should not lift heavy objects above shoulder level. If you decide to push and pull furniture across the floor, make sure the glider is properly attached first. Move the furniture around slowly and check to make sure nothing scratches the floor in your house in the process. Remember, this is not a race.
