Uptown Whittier furniture store founder, local leader dead at 94

James Edward Perry, owner of the former H.J. Perry Furniture Co. in Uptown Whittier and leader of many several community organizations, has died. He was 94.


Death was attributed to multiple complications of failing health.

Perry came to Whittier from South Dakota, where he was born June 18, 1915.

Besides establishing the furniture company that bears his name, he was elected to the Whittier City School District board and served as its president, was also a member of the Whittier Library Board, past president of the Whittier Historical Society and officer in the Whittier Host Lions Club.

A memorial service is being planned for 2 p.m. on Jan. 16 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Laguna Beach.

A Sunday Tribute to Mr. Perry is planned in this newspaper Dec. 20.
