What is Basement?

Basement is often an option to outsmart the limit land that can be used to build houses or buildings, especially in big cities. With less land, it becomes difficult to build a house or a large building horizontally. Therefore, the development is now starting to vertical direction. Whether it’s up to several floors, including a basement.

Basement is a room that’s below ground level, underneath the first floor. But in its construction, the basement may not only consist of one room. Rather it consists of several rooms on one floor. Therefore, by the definition of basement can be interpreted as a part of the building or floor that located below the ground level or the ground floor of a building.

By presenting more space in the building, the basement can also used for many things. Such as:

Parking Lot
In a building, the basement is generally used as a parking space for both cars and motorbikes. Basement is indeed the best solution to be able to get more vehicle parking capacity, compared to relying on the parking area in the front and back yard of the building. With its underground position, the parking area in the basement can maintain the aesthetic value of the building. While, it can prevent the cars from heat and rain.

Utility Room
Basement can used as a utility room. Starting from MEP (Mechanical Electrical Plumbing), Power Supply, generators, breaker panels or fuse boxes, engine rooms, water heaters, air conditioning systems, to building cable distribution points.
By placing these important utility parts in the basement, the management will be easier.

Warehouse
Whether in a building or at home, the basement can used as a warehouse or a place to store unused items. In the building, the warehouse in the basement can be used to store large objects that may not be stored in the office warehouse in the building. It can also used as a temporary storage place, before the unused objects are thrown away. While at home, by use the basement as a warehouse, unused items can have their own place to be stored. Then, the house will still look neat, and when you need to use those itmes, it will be easier to find them in their storage areas.

Workspace
Basement can also used as a workspace. Especially the basement at home, when the work from home (WFH) need is increasingly popular. With its underground location, the workspace in the basement will be quieter, and of course it will make you more focused on doing something.
In addition to the usual workspace, the basement also used for artist’s workspace, music studio, photo studio. Or a laboratory room for researchers or scientists.

Construction Function
In addition to functions based on space utilization, the basement has a function in terms of structure. Basement construction functioned to deepen the base of the building foundation, which will have an effect on the ultimate bearing capacity of the subgrade.

In addition, the basement can also increase the stability of the building construction against shear or overturning forces. Because in making the basement excavation will be carried out, if the weight of the excavated soil is the same as the weight of the building above it, then theoretically there will be no subsidence of the building.
