When Is the Right Time to Change Furniture?

The furniture that you have today may still look sturdy and strong. But after a few years, 15 or 20 years later the furniture will become fragile with time or suffer damage. Basically, not all furniture or furnishings can last long. Even though the furniture does not have expiration time like food, but one day it will definitely experience damage. Durable or not the furniture you have, will depend on the basic materials that make it up.

Not only that, the more often the furniture used, the more it is to shorten the damage time. The average age of the furniture is more than five years. Sofa 7-15 years old, upholstered chair 7-10 years, wooden chair 10-15 years, dining table 15-20 years, and coffee table 5-10 years. Then bed 15-20 years, storage shelves 10-20 years, tables 15 years, office chairs 7-10 years, patio furniture 10 years, woven and rattan furniture 10 years, and mattresses 5-10 years. Then, there are several features that you should know, that the furniture has begun to break down and needs to be replaced:

Sofa
If the sofa creaks, the cushions are loose, and all the lumbar support is gone, it’s time to replace them with new ones. Stained, smelly, peeling, or torn finishes are signs that it is need replacement or at least a new coating job needs to be done.

Upholstered chairs
The same replacement instructions apply to upholstered chairs. One additional thing that needs to be evaluated on this chair is the reclining mechanism. If they no longer function smoothly, it’s time for a new chair.

Wooden chairs
Either a dining chair or a side chair, a wooden chair should be replaced if the legs wobbly or if the wood breaks. If the seat is layered, the upholstery can often be replaced easily as long as the seat structure is sturdy.

Dining table
The dining table may be look not too good from scratches, dents, and burns before the structure is brittle. Tables are usually replaced when a larger or smaller size is required to fit the space and number of users.

Coffee table
Most coffee tables are down by hot coffee cups, and wet drinking glasses. They should be replaced if they become wobbly, look not good, or no longer fit the space and style of the room.

Bed
If the bed frame starts to creak, that’s a good sign that you should replace it immediately. The beds are often changed as the children grow to bigger sizes.

Wardrobes, drawers and dressers
All types of cabinets, drawers and dressers should be replaced when the frames are no longer sturdy and can no longer be opened and closed easily.

Desk
The table should be replaced if it is wobbly or if there are drawers that cannot be opened and closed easily. Most desks are being replaced because jobs and technology need to change.

Office chair
If your office chair is used 40 hours per week, it will last around seven to 10 years. Its age will depend on whether the table is made of solid wood, metal, or plastic and whether it is covered in leather or fabric. You will know the right time for a new chair when the upholstery becomes worn and the chair becomes uncomfortable because there is no lumbar support.

Terrace furniture
Whether made of rattan, plastic, or metal, patio furniture should be replaced if it is unstable and will not support the weight of an adult. You can extend the life of your furniture by keeping it out of direct sunlight, cleaning it regularly, and storing it properly during the spring.

Mattress
This is probably the most used furniture. It should be replaced when it is loose, has a strong odor, and no longer provides the support needed for a good night’s sleep without back pain.
