\nLike so much mid-20th-century furniture, the once-scorned sectional sofa is back in a big way. But leave it to the Dutch, those fearless rethinkers of design, to take the genre a step beyond.

The Circle sofa, from the German company Walter Knoll, was designed by Ben van Berkel, the director and a co-founder of UN Studio, the Amsterdam architecture firm that recently completed a striking museum for Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart.<\/p>\n
The approximately 15-foot sofa \u00e2\u20ac\u201d whose metal frame is covered in foam and upholstered in a stretch fabric \u00e2\u20ac\u201d comes in up to four parts, which can be configured several ways, including the eponymous circle, as well as a semicircle and an “S” shape. The height of the sections is constant, but the pitch of the seat and back changes to allow, say, one member of the family to sit upright to work at a laptop computer while another can lounge to watch television.<\/p>\n
Van Berkel was inspired by that 1970’s classic, the conversation pit, but he calls the Circle “a new form, an intimate social relational sofa.” Innovation doesn’t come cheap, though; even the most basic setup costs around $15,000.<\/p>\n
