Store Closes Months Shy Of 100th Birthday
\nHENDERSON, N.C. — A Henderson furniture store is closing after nearly 100 years of business, but the store is winding down with one last hurrah.

\nThe Henderson Furniture Company is closed while workers hang banners and mark down prices for the start of its going-out-of-business sale, starting Wednesday. Items such as recliners and lamps are reduced by at least 50 percent.<\/p>\n
Many residents are upset over the 99-year-old store’s closing.<\/p>\n
“I’m disappointed because I sure come here to buy me a living room suite,” said customer Kathy Richardson. “They always have good furniture. My grandma has been shopping with them for the last 35 or 40 years.”<\/p>\n
“We just had a call a while ago, and the fellow said, ‘I got three generations trading with you right now,'” said Ernie Boyette of Henderson Furniture Company.<\/p>\n
Boyette said declining sales are the reason the store is packing up.<\/p>\n
“We’re not making our sales quotas, more or less, not enough sales,” he said.<\/p>\n
It is a store and a warehouse that downtown Henderson cannot afford to lose.<\/p>\n
“It’s a fixture downtown, and it’s going to be hard to replace,” said Bill Edwards of the Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n
Boyette resisted the push to move to the shopping center years ago. Henderson Furniture made its stand to stay downtown.<\/p>\n
