\nMarisia Lukaszewski knew she was in for some fun when she called on prospective entrants in the 22nd annual Fringe Furniture, showcasing contemporary design, to “Go for baroque!”<\/p>\n
“There is a great deal of humour in most of the pieces that have come in,” says the Fringe Furniture producer.<\/p>\n
She punned on an ornate style of art developed in Italy in the 16th century when deciding on a theme that playfully reflected a renewed use of “fripperies and details”.<\/p>\n
“I wanted to address that but in a fun way,” says Lukaszewski, who is curating the event for the second time.<\/p>\n
She’s impressed with the exhibits, including a screen made of old squash racquets, among more than 60 on display at Melbourne Museum during The Age Melbourne Fringe Festival. “In terms of invention and cleverness, there’s a lovely design component to this,” she says of the work that Melbourne-based Sandy Imeson has titled Pro Racquet 10,000 – “the technique of recycling the racquets and making wood look like metal.”<\/p>\n
Lukaszewski named Imeson’s work the winner of the main prize – the $2000 Banyule City Council acquisition prize – among eight awards at the opening last night by Deputy Lord Mayor Gary Singer. “Harnessing the organic and classic shape of the squash racquet,” Imeson explains in a note on the exhibit, “the Pro Racquet 10,000 slams life into an obsolete material . . .”<\/p>\n
Exhibits include tables, a chandelier, and a granite and marble seat, titled Ba Rock; its designer, Michiel van Luijn, was highly commended. Jenni Baxter’s Oops, a white woollen carpet resembling spilt milk, won an award for “most playful piece”.<\/p>\n
Fringe Furniture, which coincides with the State of Design Festival on from next week, is the longest-running of about 250 events at the Fringe Festival, and has been a popular attraction since a few years after the festival began in 1982.<\/p>\n
“It is the oldest event,” says the festival’s creative producer, Kath Melbourne, in which more than 3000 comedy, cabaret, dance and circus performers, musicians and visual artists are taking part . “It has an extremely high profile.” Organisers estimate that more than 40,000 people saw the event last year.<\/p>\n
Lukaszewski attributes the enduring appeal of the event, from which has emerged top designers including Gordon Tait and Marc Pascal, in part to the fact that it “always has a sense of whimsy . . . People are always drawn to it because they know they’ll come and get a bit of a laugh,” she says, “and get a bit confused and bemused”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
