WALTHAM, Mass. — Welcome to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Year of American Design,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Davis Remignanti, the lead design consultant for online retailer www.furniture.com.

\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This year I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m finding that people want to define what it means to be American \u00e2\u20ac\u201d who they are and what they believe in,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Remignanti.

He said the trend has been building for a long time, stemming from the 2000 and 2004 elections, the 9\/11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Look at what happened with Katrina,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Remignanti. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153People thought, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcWhen disaster happens, my government will be there.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 And then suddenly, maybe that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not true.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
Now people want their homes to be comforting in a new way.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153People are saying to themselves more than ever that they want their interiors to reflect how they feel,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said the designer.<\/p>\n
As they try to figure out what it means to be an American, many are looking to their ancestors, leaning toward imperfection rather than highly polished looks.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153For 2013, there will be a renewed interest in finishes that are textured, slightly rough-hewn, reflecting common histories as make-do immigrants in a new land,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Remignanti. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153And in a single room, diverse pieces can find a common focus through beauty of line, quality of craftsmanship, and connection to the world that inspired their creation.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
He suggests some home d\u00c3\u00a9cor themes for the Year of American Design:<\/p>\n
* American Charm:
\nLinens, boucles, tweeds, raw silks and cottons and other \u00e2\u20ac\u0153rough\u00e2\u20ac\u009d textiles are replacing damasks, velvets and other refined fabrics throughout the home, from bed linens to upholstery to window coverings. Their imperfections define their charm.<\/p>\n
* Natural Connection:
\nMaterials like seagrass, jute and sisal \u00e2\u20ac\u201d used in carpets mostly for casual settings \u00e2\u20ac\u201d are also gaining popularity as floor coverings in formal interiors, where their natural characteristics reflect our sense of being rooted in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153our soil.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
* Diverse Design:
\nOverly matched interiors and suites are giving way to a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153melting pot\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of complementary pieces. This reflects America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s multicultural influences and diversity.<\/p>\n
*\u00c2\u00a0New and Old:
\nThe desire for typically European or Asian furniture style is waning as people come to appreciate designs, new and antique, with a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153home grown\u00e2\u20ac\u009d heritage \u00e2\u20ac\u201d even if those designs, like most Americans, might trace their lineage to other continents and cultures.<\/p>\n
* Rugged Individualism:
\nPolished materials and finishes are falling into disfavor, displaced by ones a little rough around the edges. Look for woods to show more knots and grain, and minerals like limestone and slate used in place of marble and granite.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This year, look for home interiors to become more personalized, as we define and redefine ourselves,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Remignanti. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Each home, though it could be vastly different than the one next door, will feel more uniquely American during 2013 than ever before.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
