\n SOUTH BEND — A 49-year-old South Bend man crashed his
\n\t\t
\ntruck into the Whims & Wishes Interiors furniture retail store on Indiana 933 south of Auten Road about 7:20 p.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n
According to police, James Taylor was driving north when he reportedly fell asleep.<\/p>\n
The truck swerved to the west across two lanes of southbound traffic and crashed through the large glass windows in the front of the store.<\/p>\n
The truck was all the way inside the store, sideways. A tow truck was called to pull out the truck.<\/p>\n
Taylor was not injured and refused a trip to a local hospital, police said.<\/p>\n
Neither Taylor, who was being followed in a vehicle by his daughter, nor his daughter, who appeared shaken by the event, agreed to talk to The Tribune.<\/p>\n
Neighbors of the store said they heard the accident.<\/p>\n
Brittany Pendergrass, 17, South Bend, who lives three houses south of the store, says she was standing on the front porch of her house when the truck crashed.<\/p>\n
“I heard the truck skid and then it sounded like it blew up at first,” Pendergrass says.<\/p>\n
Although the store was closed for the day, it has been open for holiday business.<\/p>\n
No one was inside the store at the time of the crash.<\/p>\n
The owner of the store, Marcia Colip, was unavailable for comment Sunday.<\/p>\n
Police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.<\/p>\n
