{"id":318,"date":"2013-03-21T09:58:02","date_gmt":"2013-03-21T04:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/indonesia-furniture.com\/news\/?p=318"},"modified":"2013-03-21T09:58:02","modified_gmt":"2013-03-21T04:28:02","slug":"retailers-skeptical-about-brazil-design-value","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indonesia-furniture.com\/articles\/retailers-skeptical-about-brazil-design-value\/","title":{"rendered":"Retailers skeptical about Brazil design, value"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gary Evans<br \/>\nU.S. merchants offer comments<\/p>\n<p>SAO PAULO, Brazil \u00e2\u20ac\u201d American retailers got the royal treatment here, but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hard to say whether it was enough to convince them of the value of Brazilian goods.<\/p>\n<p> <!--adsense--><\/p>\n<p>Twenty or so U.S. furniture merchants were among the 90 foreign visitors taking part in the International Buyers Project and Furniture Fair here recently sponsored by ABIMAD, the Brazilian High-End Furniture Manufacturers Assn.<\/p>\n<p> The group gave high marks to the ABIMAD staff for its efforts, but wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t overly impressed by the design and value of the Brazilian product.<br \/>\n <!--more--><\/p>\n<p> Here is a sampling of their comments:<\/p>\n<p>* Perry Sigesmund, an owner of high-end contemporary store PerLora in Pittsburgh, Pa.:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It was definitely a learning experience. But I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not sure their product is compatible or fits in with the needs of the consumer in the States.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>He said that in upholstery, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I found that they were more up against the Chinese quality price point. It wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t for us but for the promotional store in the U.S., yes, I think it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s interesting. They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re willing to work with you on price&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m just not sure it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more interesting than anything else that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s out there,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he added. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the whole thing. When you look at product coming out of Holland, when you look at product coming out of Italy, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s distinctive.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>* Herschel Alpert, president of Alperts in Seekonk, Mass.:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153As I went through the goods, I thought they were Italian styling primarily, and I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think that they were particularly tonnage for the American market. Based on the current dollar to the Brazilian currency, they didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t represent particular value.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Alpert praised the ABIMAD staff, but felt that the show\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s exhibitors weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t \u00e2\u20ac\u0153prepared to deal with the American market because there was no great attempt to have English-speaking people in the showrooms.\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153There were some interesting things that I saw there that would be neat if I had a small high-end store and was looking for unique things with a unique story, then I would buy Brazilian goods, probably from a distributor,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n<p>* Howard Haimsohn, president of Lawrance Contemporary Home Furnishings in San Diego:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I did see some merchandise that would be appropriate for our stores. There were some very clean contemporary designs, some not that different from what we would see from a good contemporary maker in the U.S. or maybe in Italy.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Haimsohn was disappointed that he didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see products made with exotic Brazilian woods, which might have made them distinctive.
