\n Maku’s furniture is designed in Encinitas, Calif., and made in Java from sustainable Indonesian teak, reclaimed or plantation-grown. The company says it is a member of One Percent for the Planet, an alliance of businesses that donate 1 percent of sales to environmental organizations worldwide. Maku also runs a scholarship program for young people in Bali, to promote the benefits of a good education.<\/p>\n
Among Maku’s chairs, chaises and tables introduced at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City in May, one piece has its own distinction: a lounge chair in a limited edition of 250. The simple modern design has an understated extra detail: hand-carved panels depicting frangipani flowers are set under the arms on each side of the chair (price $1,399).<\/p>\n
