\n (WCCO) Whether you want bunk beds or a new dining room table, shopping for furniture is time-consuming and expensive. Here in the Twin Cities we have many stores to choose from, but apparently some offer much better customer service and prices than others.<\/p>\n
When you are spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on a piece of furniture, you want to make sure you get good quality at a good price and exactly what you want. Twin Cities Consumers’ Checkbook magazine examines the topic in this month’s issue.

\nHere are some of the most common complaints they received from customers who were surveyed. Forty-nine percent of the furniture store reviews dealt with dissatisfaction with customer service or the sales staff — stuff like bad advice or bad attitudes.<\/p>\n
Delays in delivery also top the list, with 29 percent, followed by damaged furniture or the wrong furniture arriving. Twenty-seven percent said that was a problem.<\/p>\n
“Some of those, when it does happen, they are very responsive. They deal with it right away. Checkbook also found some stores were very bad with following up if you actually had a problem,” said Robert Krughoff, president of Twin Cities Consumers’ Checkbook. “So here you have an expensive investment, you didn’t get the thing, you didn’t get it good condition and have tremendous hassle getting that dealt with.”<\/p>\n
Twin Cities Consumers’ Checkbook also found that ordering furniture online may not be as thrifty as you think.<\/p>\n
You might think you are going to save a lot of money, but Checkbook actually found that if you shop carefully locally you are likely able to get as good of a deal as if you buy mail order, because you have to take into account the delivery charges as well. And there are some risks in buying mail order. If you have a problem, who do you deal with?<\/p>\n
Krughoff said one strategy that has proven to work is this: when you find the item you want, write down the model number and size, and then get on the phone.<\/p>\n
“And then call several other stores and say, ‘Can you order this item from the factory and what would your price be if you do order it?’ You are likely to find big differences in price for those items that you can shop by phone where the stores can order from the factory.”<\/p>\n
Krughoff said be sure to inspect your stuff closely upon arrival and it there is problem, don’t hesitate to report or you may be sorry.<\/p>\n
“As soon as you discover there is a problem with a piece of furniture you have gotten from a store, bring it to the attention of the store, in writing by letter, by e-mail, by fax, by something. If you don’t do that, they may think you are the one who did the damage if there is a period of time that elapses,” he said.<\/p>\n
