He pops them in $26 zinc pots from Thailand that can be mounted with a picture hanger (Staghorn Fern shown at top; $72).

Ferns, succulents and orchids from a Monterey County nursery he has chosen for its consistent quality are available, as well as concrete or galvanized iron planters, simple rubber cache pots, iron stands and ceramic pots.

Giacomazzi’s choice of furniture and accessories follows his philosophy of “clean, simple, not overly ornate – honest material.”

He also wants to offer items not available elsewhere around town. His stock includes a Richard Serra-inspired Macassar console table at $1,975 and stainless steel chaise longue at $2,985, both from Desiron in Brooklyn, N.Y.; a water vessel designed by Joseph Jujol in 1912 for a Barcelona orphanage, done in sea-foam glass (shown at left) at $132; and a clay candelabrum by Klein Reid for $525.

Some accessories include place mats, trays and coasters of wood veneer in walnut, maple or zebra wood backed with foam for $12 to $56.

Fly swatters in the shape of a fly, made in Finland, for $23 are real charmers.

Area San Francisco’s location on the edge of the traditional antiques dealers row pleases Giacomazzi. He said he chose the location because he liked the blending of Old World and New World design.

Area San Francisco is at 540 Jackson St. (at Columbus), (415) 989-2732. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday, except Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

– Laura Thomas

GARDENER’S DELIGHT /

Indonesia in your backyard

Matthew Schoenwald has a collection of choice items from Indonesia he is eager to sell to the public next month.

The former landscaper went on a trip to Southeast Asia and surprised himself by returning with four cargo containers of treasures. “I was like a kid in the candy store,” he said.

Schoenwald started Calypso Garden Home as an adjunct to his Calypso Landscape business and has been selling to designers and architects for a while, but he’s ready to offer a portion of his inventory in a one-day-only sale June 3.

His items are special finds and all have a story behind them.

There are hand-painted ostrich and goose eggs from a village in Bali (shown at right; $50). Thirteen families in the village learned the art from a Dutch man, Schoenwald said, and now it’s a skilled art they specialize in.

At Lombok, an island near Bali, Schoenwald discovered finely woven grass baskets that take three months to make and are in the $380 to $650 price range. “They remind me of American Indian baskets,” he said.

He scored some old terra-cotta pots on Java that the villagers thought he was crazy to want (shown below; $100 to $250).

Furniture, garden ornaments, statues (reclining Buddhas and lava stone lions) and fountains are all on the block.

Some smaller and less expensive items include square carved plates and vases from Lombok at $20 to $35.

Schoenwald said he has a lot of animal figures that he knows are always very popular.

He’s hoping that offering 20 to 40 percent off these basic wholesale prices will attract buyers from all over the Bay Area to his Emeryville warehouse because he’s found that San Franciscans have a complex “about coming across that bridge,” he said.

With final prices as low as $1 up to a high of $2,000, that could be incentive enough.

The sale runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 3 at 6635 Hollis St. (between 66th and 67th streets), Emeryville.
