\nThe roads are littered with potholes and the stress of backseat bickering will have you begging for mercy before you can unfold the map. If you really want to relax, look no further than your own backyard patio.

\n“Outdoor living rooms are becoming big,” said Cory Curtis, a patio and casual furniture store manager. “People aren’t traveling as much anymore, and they want to add another room to have a vacation at home.”
\nWhether you prefer casual or luxury, furniture choice sets the tone.<\/p>\n
The essentials
\nMost people are concerned with comfort and looks when buying patio furniture. “We ask them how many people they need to seat, how they want to use the space and what’s important to them,” said Curtis.
\nSome people realize they need a dining table, while others just want a seating area where they can relax. Remember, said Curtis, “You can start with a few basic pieces and add on as you go.”<\/p>\n
The design
\nLike decorating indoors, the design has to fit the lifestyle of the family, said Curtis. Patio furniture comes in many different finishes, each with its own set of aesthetic and maintenance issues.
\n“Wicker is nostalgic,” said Curtis. But today’s finishes allow wicker to be left outdoors without risk of damage, and it never needs to be painted.
\nThose wanting a natural look might prefer teakwood benches or tables, though the upkeep may be somewhat more troublesome.<\/p>\n
Extras
\nOnce you’ve determined the basic look of your outdoor room, consider making it feel like a true vacation destination.
\n“Gazebos are hot,” said Kelly Haddock, executive team leader for a Target store.
\n“Fire bowls and actual outdoor fireplaces are also popular this year,” said Haddock. “We sell covers for them, so they don’t rust when not in use.”
\nAdd an umbrella to your dining table, or use it as a standalone awning over the seating area. Complete the look with an outdoor area rug, some plants and a fountain.<\/p>\n
Luxurious life
\nIf your budget allows for a custom patio design, consider including an outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, side burner, sink and refrigerator.
