New Waukee business offers unique furniture

By Elizabeth Martin
Mi Casa, a new furniture and home decor store in Waukee, offers several unique and authentic pieces straight from Mexico.

Owners John and Erika Stubbs opened the business less than one month ago and Erika said things are going well.
“We talked about it a long time ago,” said Erika. “We are from Mexico originally and knew there was nothing like it around here so we thought it would be a good business to start.”
The couple chose to open in Waukee largely because it was close to home, but their location at 495 Alice’s Road may likely be perfect once construction is finished and traffic increases with the road’s extension further south.
Every item in the store is handmade in Mexico and carries a uniqueness not found with typical furniture stores.
Mi Casa offers furniture such as kitchen tables, chairs and benches and also offers drums, and pottery.
Stubbs said she hopes to have a jewelry collection soon with some crystal and silver pieces.
Stubbs said the business offers Mata Ortiz and Juan Quezada pottery pieces.
According to the Mata Ortiz Website, the pueblo in Mexico was led by Juan Quezada and creates “outstanding, handmade, coiled pots following centuries old methods.”
They also create contemporary works of art and “often incorporate Mimbres designs shared by the southwest native American cultures.”
Stubbs said she has already participated in some shows in the area and also plans to promote the business at a show at Adventureland in November.
Mi Casa is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
