The concept and construction of modern buildings today are increasingly diverse. The use of wood for modern construction can be an alternative that provides many benefits for the environment, economy, and human health.
Do you often encounter Joglo buildings, rumah gadang, or stilt houses? Construction is one of the industries that influence the acceleration of a country’s development. In Indonesia, construction has developed along with economic growth. One of the important aspects of physical development is the selection of materials used.
Previously, large traditional buildings in several regions of Indonesia often used wood as the main material. However, currently, modern construction projects in Indonesia use concrete.
Concreting is considered a modern form of large-scale projects, such as flats, bridges, and so on because of its strength. The production and consumption of cement have continued to increase many times over to millions of tons since 1958.
Although concrete has been the main raw material for national strategic projects for decades, it has challenges, such as limited resources and impacts on environmental damage. Concrete-based construction can consume 40 percent of the world’s energy in the construction and operation phases.
However, since development prioritizes positive impacts on the economy, society, and environment has become a concern for countries worldwide, and environmentally friendly building materials have become popular again.
This year, the building and construction sector has made major changes. Through the discourse of World Green Building or environmentally friendly buildings and construction, the World Green Building Councils (WGBC) designed an acceleration of the future transition to energy-efficient, regenerative, and fair for all. One of them is the breakthrough in wood materials for buildings and construction. For example, the green building project Wood City in Sweden, the tower in Norway, and the 43,500 square meter Nanyang Technological University campus in Singapore.
