BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A severe storm Monday night damaged the roof in Standard Furniture’s
plant here, closing the plant Tuesday as emergency inspections were made.
A section of roof about 50 or 60 feet across was damaged over a walkway connected to the southwest side of the plant, an area containing the research and development and sample shop, said Todd Evans, vice president of sales and marketing.
While the plant’s sawmills and router stations work a second shift, the R&D shop was empty at night and there were no injuries, Evans said. Work could have resumed Tuesday, but company officials wanted the facility fully inspected for any further damage before sending employees back inside.
The daylong shutdown at the 700-employee plant probably cost about half a million dollars in lost production, Evans estimated. He said he hadn’t heard repair cost figures yet.
