Land of Nod recalls children's furniture

By Lisa Casinger
Children’s furniture retailer Land of Nod is recalling about 2,000 units of its Cottage collection because some pieces in

the antique white finish use paint that contains lead, which is banned by federal law.

Land of Nod said it discovered the lead during routine testing and notified the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

“As soon as we found out there was an issue, we tested everything we had in stock,” said Jamie LaPorta, director of merchandising.

The recall includes the antique white Cottage two-over-four drawer dresser; the three- and seven-drawer dressers; the accessory top; the District 28 armoire and its shelf kit; the double-door armoire and its shelf kit; the lower-rider bookcase and its shelf kit; and the Cottage nightstand.

The furniture, manufactured in Mexico, was sold through the retailer’s catalog, Web site and four stores in Illinois and Washington from September 2003 to August 2013 for between $50 and $1,100.

Consumers can contact Land of Nod at (866) 990-5263 or recall@landofnod.com to determine if their furniture is in the recall. Land of Nod will arrange for an exchange, credit or refund, and offer consumers a gift card.

This is only the second product recall in Land of Nod’s 10-year history. The company, which has a partnership with Top 100 furniture store Crate & Barrel, has three Chicago-area stores and one in Seattle.

The federal ban on lead-containing paint aims to protect children who might ingest paint chips or peelings, which can cause adverse health effects. No incidents or injuries have been reported in relation to the Land of Nod products.
