Peter Korn on furniture craftsmanship at AAUW, Wed., Jan. 17, 2014

By American Association of University Women
ROCKLAND (Jan 7): Director Peter Korn will discuss

the history of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship at the meeting of the Midcoast Maine Branch of the American Association of University Women in the Community Room of the Rockland Public Library on Wednesday, Jan. 17. The program at 1 p.m. is free and open to the public.

It has been stated that designing a good chair is one of the most challenging aspects of furniture craftsmanship. The display of chairs in the current exhibit in the Messler Gallery of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship attest to this. They encompass the bizarre, the comic, the elegant, and the practical.

Peter Korn, Director of the Center fro Furniture Craftsmandship will be speaking at the Rockland Public Library on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Peter Korn founded the Center in his barn in 1992. Now a sprawling complex off Mill Road in Rockport, ME, and internationally known, neophyte students and skilled woodworkers come to this resource to take courses ranging from woodworking fundamentals to marquetry.

Korn’s philosophy of teaching creative excellence in furniture making underlies his account of the development of the Center, and the importance of building a strong faculty and board.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Korn has been Program Director of the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado and on the faculty of Drexel University. He is the author of well respected books on aspects of his craft. His own award-winning furniture has been exhibited in galleries and museums.

Former student Libby Schrum will be joining the discussion. Trained for a career in Sports Management, she took the Twelve-week Intensive course at the Center, and moved on to gain an MFA at Rhode Island School of Design in 2004. She is currently employed as a cabinetmaker for a boat builder in Thomaston, ME, as well as working independently.
