Furniture Brands' fills Broyhill post

Furniture Brands International Inc. said Monday that Jeffrey Cook was named president of its Broyhill Furniture Industries Inc. subsidiary.

Cook succeeds Harvey Dondero, who resigned in June 2013. Dondero had been on the job about 14 months, taking the post in April 2012 after Dennis Burgette resigned. After Dondero’s resignation, Furniture Brands’ president and chief operating officer, Tom Foy, took over the president and CEO duties on an interim basis.

Since 1998, Cook has been president and CEO of Magnussen Home Furnishings Inc., a Canadian firm with offices in Ontario, Canada; High Point, N.C.; Riverside, Calif.; and Asia.

The Broyhill Furniture unit has continued to cut its operations. Last year, the company closed one Lenoir, N.C., case goods facility and announced plans to close another Lenoir case goods facility in February 2014. The two plant shut-downs resulted in the loss of 1,090 jobs.

Overall, Furniture Brands has seen a lot of top-level turnover in the last two years. Seamus Bateson left his post as president and CEO of the firm’s Maitland-Smith division in April 2013 to take those titles at St. Louis-based CFGroup. Steve McKee left his post as president and CEO of the company’s Henredon unit in August 2012 to pursue other interests. Randall Spak resigned as president and CEO of Furniture Brands’ Lane unit in July 2012 “by mutual agreement,” the company said at the time.

The company saw its profit dip 10.4 percent last year to $55.1 million on revenue that grew just 1.3 percent to $2.42 billion. Furniture Brands officials cited softened retail conditions and said the company had continued steps to reduce inventory.

St. Louis-based Furniture Brands International Inc. (NYSE: FBN) manufactures furniture under the Thomasville, Henredon, Drexel Heritage, Maitland-Smith, Broyhill and Lane brands.
