Officials to vote on furniture ordinance

ELON, N.C. — The Elon Board of Alderman is expected to approve an appearance standard ordinance this week.

If the measure passes, officials say it’ll mean people will have to keep what belongs inside their house, inside their house.

Supporters of the measure want appliances and living room furniture out of front yards.

“For the most part it allows us to clean up trash on the front lawn or something, but nothing beyond the front lawns into the side or rear properties,” explained Elon Town Planner Tonya Caddle. “It allows us to, when we have a complaint about it, to write it up as a violation and if the violation isn’t fixed or taken care of in 15 to 30 days, the town can go in and make amends however needed.”

The board will vote Tuesday. If approved, people who don’t comply with the ordinance will be fined $50 a day or will pay for town to clean up the furniture for them.
