ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Mattress producers hoping for extra time to get ready for the implementation of a new federal mattress standard are out of luck: The standard goes into effect as scheduled on July 1, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Officials of the International Sleep Products Assn. delivered that message to their members last week. ISPA said questions have been raised about whether CPSC is planning to postpone the July 1 start date.
In an update sent to its membership, ISPA said it had contacted CPSC officials and had confirmed that the standard remains on schedule. ISPA said it continues to urge its members to be prepared to fully implement the new standard on July 1.
On a related issue, ISPA said its Sleep Products Safety Council, which has played a key role in coordinating industry activities on the mattress flammability front, will be collecting information on the new standard that could possibly be used to improve it.
ISPA said it will determine, based on industry comments about the new standard, if there are parts of the standard that should be revisited to enhance the standard’s effectiveness.Â
SPSC will be sending a questionnaire to industry players asking for their comments.
