Tips for Choosing the Right Upholstery for the Room

Does your room need a refresh and update of the seat cushions to get a new home look? Are you bored with the same upholstery motifs? Find out how to determine the right upholstery for your home!

Upholstery is a material made from fabric or upholstery for seat cushions, sofas, furniture, which includes materials, textures, motifs, and colors. Choosing and determining upholstery is as difficult as when you choose furniture. Upholstery of sofa cushions is an important part of furniture. It is also a long term investment for you. Choose the wrong color or sofa motif, then the overall look of the room you want can be very different. If that’s the case, you can’t help but have to see the look of your room that doesn’t match with your expectations every day for years.

When you want to shop for a new sofa or just want to replace the sofa cushions, prioritize your practical needs. First, determine how you live and who will come into contact with the furniture. That will determine what type of material is right for you. You might like the silver velvet silk fabric, but it won’t take long for you to have small children and pets at home. Fabric for living rooms and family rooms furniture, requires good quality and durable materials. Meanwhile, furniture that doesn’t in contact with people too often, such as room seats and headboards, can use a variety of fabrics.

A common mistake people make, is not thinking about how fabric or leather ages over time. Check the label and ask the clerk or salesperson about the composition of the material and what is needed to wash it, then think about how to care for it. How will it look 5 years from now? Can you do regular vacuum cleaning? Will you close the curtains when you go out to prevent the upholstery from naturally fading?

Today, there are many materials for beautiful upholstery with good durability. For homes with children and pets, use materials that easy to care for and clean, such as suede or sunbrella, fabrics made especially for indoor and outdoor use. You can also use a slipcover or upholstery protector for extra protection. Meanwhile, if you use leather, you won’t have to worry about scratches and stains. And if you are a busy family, avoid soft fabrics like silk which may be comfortable to feel, but will be very troublesome if they get stained.

If small children and pets are not a problem, you can more freely choose upholstery materials. Soft Tibetan wool or Belgian Linen for a luxurious look. Sitting and feeling the sofa with the upholstery of this material feels like being pampered. But not suitable if you bring food. Although linen is extremely durable, in lighter colors it does not provide the level of stain resistance required by households with children. If you are worried about maintenance costs, you don’t need to use the luxurious fabrics above for the entire sofa upholster, but just use it on cushions that can be replaced at any time if there is a new trend.

Use the shape of your furniture as a consideration in choosing patterns and fabric motifs for upholstery. If your furniture tends to have a curved shape, choose a fabric with solid or bold color. Patterns or textures in different directions do not layer well. A pattern that looks great on a roll of fabric may not look as good once it’s been cut apart and put back together on your sofa, especially if it’s an elaborate and ornate shape.

Also consider the size of the furniture. You can choose larger pieces of furniture, such as sofas, in rich solid colors or classic neutrals, so you won’t get bored over time. Liven up with smaller items, for example, chairs in a bolder color or pattern. Think about the other furniture in the room as well, especially other fabric items. You’ll want to make sure the colors, textures, and patterns work well together.
