Who is an Interior Designer?

Many people think that ‘interior designer’ and ‘interior decorator’ are the same. Even though these two professions are quite different. This is not just a difference in terminology, but the services focus is also different.

There are many special aspects of a building or space that need to be designed in detail. Usually, the architect as a building designer will ask for the help of a special designer to design each part of the space in as much detail as possible. Architects need the help of interior designers, landscape architects, lighting designers, and other specialized designers.

An interior designer’s scope of work usually focuses on one room or one part of the room to give a special impression to that room or part of the room. Interior designers have a role in creating functional, safe, comfortable, efficient, and aesthetic areas that support the function of the space.

Interior designers learn and apply detailed skills regarding:

  • lighting design
  • type, nature, texture, and color of materials, as well as their use
  • theory and history of design
  • building systems and technology
  • a design that is durable and does not go out of style
  • useful and accessible design
  • project management
  • codes and standards applicable in the respective region or country

Interior designers are also able to communicate well with other professionals in related fields, from architects to fabric traders in wholesale markets. This ability is very needed so that all design ideas can be implemented well and optimally. For example, when designing a kitchen, precision and adequate experience also influence the selection of a kitchen set that suits design and functional needs.
