NEW YORK — Two independent truckers serving 1-800-Mattress were killed last week in an accident on the George Washington Bridge here.
Driver Salvador Vasquez and assistant Wilfred Gomez were employees of Eleven Truckers, an independent contractor to the bedding retailer that delivers product in the New Jersey area. The pair had finished their deliveries around midnight and was heading back into New York when the accident occurred.
Independent truckers working for 1-800-Mattress operate about 30 trucks in the New York metro area and make 350 deliveries a day. Company officials said they could not recall any other trucking-related accident this serious.
“This is certainly a sad day for the 1-800-Mattress family as we mourn the death of two partners in business who helped us serve our customers,” said founder and CEO Napoleon Barragan. “This trucking company has been with us for many years and has been instrumental in helping us grow our business as a quality service provider. We regard the safety of our employees, business partners and customers as a primary concern. As always, we continue to look for ways to improve their safety.”
