Benedictine Nuns Auctioning Furniture From Steinfeld Mansion

Nuns at the Benedictine Sanctuary, 800 N. Country Club, are hoping collectors will help get them out of debt.

They’re hosting a silent auction where several pieces of furniture from the Steinfeld mansion are up for sale.

The nuns lived in the mansion for a time, back in the 1930s, before moving to the Monastery on Country Club.

“The furniture was part of the house, so it was our property too,” explains Sister Lupita Barajas, prioress of the monastery.

Barajas says maintenance on the 66-year-old building is quite expensive, as is medical care for the nuns who reside there.  Some of the sisters are in their 80s.

In the past year, the sanctuary is $75-thousand in the red.

The auction begins at the Benedictine Sanctuary on Country Club, Saturday morning, July 22,  10am until 1pm.

Successful buyers will likely be notified later in the day.
