Some of the signs at the Furniture Row store that will open early next year in Lafayette won’t be as large as what the company had hoped.
The Lafayette Board of Zoning Appeals gave unanimous approval Monday to the second scaled-back request it received from C.B.S. Sign Co., which designs and erects signs for the Denver-based retailer.
The store, near the northeast corner of Sagamore Parkway and Indiana 38, will sell oak furniture, bedroom items, sofas and mattresses at the nearly 44,000-square-foot building.
“It’s very important to establish and maintain consistency within our business,” sign company sales representative Tony Ahmed told the BZA when he agreed to reduce the original request for 695 square feet of signage, instead of the 66 square feet allowed by city code.
“We’re trying to maintain our image and maximize the investment they have in the property.”
Along with signs on the building, the company also puts a vertical Furniture Row sign at the front of its property, with a tall chair alongside.
Ahmed made some reductions from the original request and then gained some space after reducing his overall proposal to 383 square feet.
“I would feel good about going to 400 (square feet),” said board of zoning appeals member David Lahr.
The request that was approved 4-0 allows 400 square feet of signage on the property.
Also during their meeting Monday, the BZA:
Approved a request that will allow the AAA Hoosier Motor Club to have a 171/2-foot tall sign, instead of the maximum of 12 feet allowed, on its office site at 331 N. Fourth St.
The company plans to raise its existing sign and put an informational “reader board” underneath it.
Approved a request from Schumacher Homes of Lafayette Inc. for a sign of 101 square feet instead of the maximum 40 square feet at the company’s office location in the Lafayette Pavilions retail complex at 100 S. Creasy Lane.
