By Margaret Jones
ROCKPORT (March 19): Noted British furniture designer David Colwell will give a public slide presentation on Thursday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. Colwell’s talk is preceded by a potluck dinner at 6:00 p.m., to which the public is also invited.

Colwell, a resident of Wales, specializes in sustainable design. His furniture has won many awards and appears in permanent and private collections across Europe and in the USA, including London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

His most recent public commission is the Reception Desk at the new Scottish Parliament Building.

Colwell originally trained in Furniture Design at the Royal College of Art, where he has since served as a visiting lecturer.

His furniture may be seen at: www.davidcolwell.com .

Colwell is here to teach a five-week chair design project for the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s Nine-month Comprehensive course. The topics of his evening slide presentation will be his design philosophy and practice, with particular regard for the use of sustainable materials.

Those attending the potluck should bring a tasty main dish, salad, or dessert large enough to feed about eight people, plus their beverage of choice. The potluck will be held in the Satterlee Building and the slide talk will be given in the Messler Gallery on the school’s Rockport campus, at the corner of Route 90 and Mill Street.
