Ethan Allen closing plants in N.C., Okla., shedding 465 jobs

DANBURY, Conn. — Ethan Allen will close a case goods plant in Spruce Pine, N.C., and convert an upholstery plant in Atoka, Okla., into a regional distribution center, the manufacturer and retailer said.

Some 465 jobs will be eliminated. The company said it will allocate the factories’ production to its other U.S. plants or offshore sourcing.

“We sincerely regret the impact this decision will have on many of our employees. We believe, however, that this action will strengthen our logistical capabilities and improve the company’s remaining U.S. manufacturing operations,” said Chairman and CEO Farooq Kathwari.

The company will take a restructuring and impairment charge, mostly non-cash, of about $13.5 million to $14.5 million before taxes, or $8.4 million to $9.1 million (26 to 28 cents per share) after taxes. Most of the earnings effect will be in the quarter ending Sept. 30.

Ethan Allen built the 280,000-square-foot Spruce Pine plant in 1989 and the 256,000-square-foot Atoka plant in 1973. It has nine remaining plants, four each for case goods and upholstery and one for accessories, with 3 million square feet and 2,300 employees.
