FREDERICK — Wayne King finds himself traveling between time zones more frequently these days.


Mr. King is the owner of Cornerstone Furnishings Inc., a custom woodworking business in Boonsboro that specializes in upscale residential cabinetry and furniture.

“We work with primarily wealthy, high-end clientele,” Mr. King said.

Cornerstone recently expanded its services to the West, manufacturing a conference table for a lighting design firm in Salt Lake City. The table has helped to spur more inquiries from would-be clients.

Traveling back and forth has been easy, because Mr. King knows he has good workers in his shop, he said.

Another factor in Mr. King’s interest in the Midwest is his ministry work. Mr. King became a born-again Christian 19 years ago, and his ultimate goal is to perform full-time ministry work in Wyoming, he said.

Mr. King will move to Wyoming one day and serve in an advisory capacity for Cornerstone, which will remain in Maryland, he said.

Cornerstone was first housed at a rented building in Brunswick. The business relocated to its present location 19 years ago, he said.

Despite mass production, Cornerstone Furnishing has flourished.

“Custom furnishings are totally custom to the clients’ tastes, as far as wood species, stain colors furnish options,” Mr. King said. “Things can be designed around the budget, and, by and large, surpass quality of anything mass-produced — you’re going to get a much better product.”

Mr. King has noticed an increase of work in the Frederick area in recent years, he said.

“One (reason) is the big building boom and the influx of people moving into the area,” Mr. King said. “Economically, folks are a little more well off than they were.”

Cornerstone’s project resumŽ also includes jobs at Camp David, the White House and in federal buildings in Washington, as well as some furnishings at FedEx Field, the home of the Washington Redksins.
