H.P. furniture maker names new president

Family-owned High Point furniture maker Emerson et Cie is passing a

leadership role in the company to a second generation, Mark Smith, son of founders Marvin and Connie Smith, is taking over as president.

The 41-year-old Smith had previously handled sales for the company in Northern California, and served as vice president and national sales manager. The elder Smiths will continue in their roles as joint chief executive officers.

Emerson et Cie was founded 22 years ago and specializes in handmade Italian-style furniture. The company has a 10,000-square-foot showroom in High Point, where it produces about a third of its products.
