Swedish retailer IKEA is slated to open its first Ohio store in West Chester Township, just north of Cincinnati, in Fall 2014.
Pending permits, construction will start in Fall 2013. Currently the nearest IKEAs for Ohio Valley customers are in Bloomington, Minn. Canton, Mich., and Bolingbrook and Schaumburg, Ill.
The 339,000 square-foot future IKEA West Chester and its 1,400 parking spaces will be built on 56 acres along I-75 at the southeastern corner of Allen and Muhlhauser Roads (Google maps link), south of the Union Centre Boulevard exit. IKEA West Chester will reflect the same unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known worldwide. In addition, IKEA will be selling approximately six acres that will be available for complementary retail and restaurant uses.
“We are thrilled to enter Ohio in West Chester, with its family atmosphere and growing business environment, where we can draw from the Cincinnati area, Columbus, Dayton, Indianapolis, Lexington and Louisville,†said Michael Maier, IKEA real estate manager. “We know IKEA West Chester will be convenient to existing customers while also introducing the unique IKEA family-friendly shopping experience to new customers throughout Ohio and beyond.â€
There currently are 237 IKEA stores in 34 countries, including 28 in the U.S., where the company plans to open 3 to 5 stores a year. Other U.S. stores are being planned in: Brooklyn, N.Y.; Draper, Utah; Dublin, Calif.; Orlando and Sunrise, Fla.; Portland, Ore.; Round Rock, Texas and Somerville, Mass.
