Indoor Furniture "Out" in Sioux City

(SIOUX CITY, IA) – After weeks of debate, indoor furniture is officially ‘out’ in Sioux City, after the city council approved a ban for things like couches and recliners.

Some members feared the ordinance infringed on peoples’ rights. The majority, however, argued the ordinance is an important tool for safety and protecting property values.

Councilman Brent Hoffman, the swing vote in favor of the ordinance, said, “The difficulty of individual rights and what color they can paint their home and how they can store things in their front yard whether it be a fridge or a stove or otherwise is always an interesting and controversial debatable point, but the reality is most cities I’ve ever lived in had a similar ordinance. It was due to property values and common standards.”

The council approved a “third reading” of the ordinance Monday night, making it official for Sioux City.
