Starting Thursday, Linder’s Fine Furnishings in McKees Rocks will begin carrying the Frank Lloyd Wright Furniture Collection.
The collection, made by Copeland Furniture of Bradford, Vt., includes pieces for the dining room, living room and bedroom.
It marks the first time the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to conserving Wright’s work, has licensed a furniture maker to produce items based on his designs and those that came out of his studio. One signature piece is the barrel chair ($999-$1,199), created by Wright in 1904 for the Darwin D. Martin House in Buffaloand redesigned in 1937.
Linder’s owner Ken Ashtari says he wanted to carry the collection “because of the way it was made.”
“It was closest to the original,” he says. “It’s great-, great-looking furniture.”
Linder’s is the only store in the area carrying the Wright Collection. Through the end of October, Linder’s will donate 5 percent of the sales of the collection to the Wright Foundation.
Woodworking Show will be at ExpoMart
The Woodworking Show comes to the ExpoMart in Monroeville next weekend.
The show will feature free demonstrations on workshop fundamentals, such as tablesaws and portable routers and bits; finishing; and woodworking tips and techniques.
Two other seminars will be offered for a fee. Shop design and layout will be discussed from 9 a.m.-noon Friday, and Shaker furniture-making for the 21st century will be covered from 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 29. Cost for the seminars is $60.
Hours for the show are noon-7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 29 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 30. Admission is $9; free for age 12 and younger.

Hazardous-waste items will be collected
Bring hazardous household waste to Boyce Park next weekend for safe disposal.
The Southwestern Pa. Household Hazardous Waste Task Force will collect items, such as cleaners, paints, stains and varnishes, car batteries, automotive fluids, pesticides, pool chemicals and other products. There is a $2-per-gallon fee, which must be paid in cash.
Items that will not be accepted include ammunition and explosives, commercial waste, compressed gas cylinders, fluorescent tubes, medical waste, dioxins, radioactive waste, smoke detectors and tires.
The collection is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Boyce Park Ski Lodge parking lot in Plum.
Seal cracks, fix leaks to keep termites away
It’s estimated that some 2 million homes will need termite treatment this year. Unfortunately, unlike with fire, there is no insurance policy that covers termite damage.
However, there are things you can do to spot and quickly correct this problem.
• Seal cracks in stucco and concrete and gaps in siding, and paint or stain everything.
• Soil around foundations should be 8 inches below walls and drain away from the house.
• All wood-like stairs and railings should have concrete footings or piers to avoid ground contact.
• Finally, find and correct all leaks inside and out, because these little pests love damp wood.
