FORT WORTH, Texas — Pier 1 Imports said its sales for the four weeks ended Aug. 26 fell 7.8% from the comparable period last year, to $114.3 million. Same-store sales skidded 9.1%.


For the fiscal year to date, Pier 1’s sales were down 8.3% and same-store sales declined 10.9%.

“Customer traffic and sales improved during the last two weeks of August; however, traffic trends remained below last year,” said Marvin Girouard, chairman and CEO. “We believe the improved traffic and sales resulted from more aggressive marketing initiatives including new TV commercials. We will continue to manage the business through promotional events designed to attract new customers into our stores.”

He said Pier 1’s fall catalog, including new furniture collections, will be circulated to about 12 million shoppers.
