Thomasville Furniture plant to close

THOMASVILLE – Thomasville Furniture Industries announced a plant closing Tuesday that will layoff 278 workers in Davidson County.

Pressure from offshore furniture manufacturing will close Plant D, a dining room manufacturing plant in Thomasville, the company’s last manufacturing plant in Davidson County.

Last November, Thomasville Furniture laid off nearly 588 workers when it closed Plant A and a support facility in Thomasville. During the past year, nearly 1,328 workers lost manufacturing jobs at U.S. plants such as Thomasville Furniture Industries and Lexington Home Brands due to the demand for lower-priced imports.

“The continued advancement in the capabilities of our offshore resources has made it very difficult for us to compete with domestically produced product,” said Nancy Webster, president and chief executive officer of Thomasville Furniture Industries in a news release Tuesday.

The closing will begin by July 1.
