UCLA Win Over USC Results In Free Furniture

(CBS) LOS ANGELES It seemed like a safe bet, but a West L.A. furniture store is going to have to ante up after offering

customers free furniture if UCLA beat the heavily favored USC.

“If the UCLA football team wins this Saturday … you’ll get your furniture free!” H.D. Buttercup Manufacturer Furniture Mart, 3225 Helms Ave., announced in television commercials and a half-page advertisement in the Los Angeles Times.

The unranked Bruins stunned No. 2-ranked USC 13-9 at the Rose Bowl Saturday afternoon and now the furniture store must pay up – free furniture to customers who ordered more than $2,000 worth before the game began.

Although the promotion was not insured, “We’re ecstatic for these people,” said Mila Becker of HD Buttercup’s public relations. “We’re glad to be a part of history.”

It was not immediately known how many people took the store’s offer or how much money the business will lose, Becker said.

The promotion began as an inter-office bet between store CFO and USC alumnus Pej Sabet and owner H.D. Buttercup, who lives in Brentwood, Becker said.

Tired of hearing Sabet bragging about his alma mater, store owners decided Wednesday night to do the promotion, Becker said.

During the game, Becker received calls from both Sabet in Los Angeles and Buttercup in New York as they cheered on their respective teams, she said.

Customers who took part in the promotion were also calling to ask how to get refunds on the furniture they bought. Customers have a week to claim their refunds, Becker said.

The first people through the door after the game were a couple who had just bought a home and were excited to be getting a free bed, Becker added.
