“A lot of history here,” says Bobby Veatch on the day before Veatch’s furniture was to close.
“(It’s closing) will change the look of downtown retail,” he said.
The store, built in 1930 by his great grandfather, H. E. Veatch, has been located on West Main since its inception.
And since, they have specialized in the sale of furniture, beddings, stoves, water heaters, and rugs.
After H. E. started the business in 1930, five generations of family would own and work in Veatch’s Furniture Company.
H. E., A. L., Gordon, Uncle Jimmy, Mary Catherine (Bobby’s mother), Bobby, and his three sons have all played a part in its history. Kathy, Bobby’s wife, has also worked in the family business.
In 1947, The Advocate documented the store’s remodel in their July 10th edition.
“The Veatch’s have been here lot of years. We hate to leave, but it’s time to move on,” explained Bobby.
After a “very successful liquidation” sale, Veatch’s Furniture Co. closed last Saturday at 5 p.m.
Hite’s Heating and Air has purchased the building and will soon be moving into the location.
