Bassett, VA – The Virginia Employment Commission met with officials from Bassett Furniture Industries Tuesday to
talk about their 300 employee layoff. The furniture company made the announcement Monday, and says it will happen over the next two to three months.
Bassett says it can’t compete with overseas markets. The VEC they’ve seen about 13-thousand layoffs over the past six years. They say that when a big company shuts down that means many of their clients have the same qualifications.
Joyce Snead, VEC-Henry County – “There are jobs available. It may not be in furniture, so individuals may have to be retrained or go through on the job training, but we can assistant them through the workforce center with that.”
The VEC held a job fair this past Friday for the 280 people that lost jobs at Hooker Furniture in January. They hope to do the same for Bassett employees.
