PORTLAND, Ore. — Ikea has broken ground on its first store here, scheduled to open in summer 2014 on 19 acres along Interstate 205 near the Portland International Airport.
The 280,000-square-foot store will be at the eastern end of Cascade Station, a 120-acre mixed-use development of office, hotel and retail.
“We are thrilled to enter the greater Portland and Vancouver area with a second home in the Pacific Northwest,†said Pat Merwin, Ikea real estate manager. The Swedish retail giant also has a Seattle-area store in Renton, Wash.
Ikea Portland will include the retailer’s usual features, such as 50 room settings, three complete model homes, a supervised children’s play area and a 250-seat restaurant. Family-friendly features will include a Children’s Ikea area in the showroom, baby care rooms, preferred parking and play areas throughout the store.
Ikea has more than 235 stores in 34 countries, including 28 in the United States, where the company plans to open three to five stores a year. Other U.S. stores are planned for Brooklyn, N.Y.; Draper, Utah; Dublin, Calif.; Round Rock, Texas; Somerville, Mass.; and Orlando and Sunrise, Fla.
